Ok guys, I have been reading all the questions and answer about getting on with a company with the various misdemeanor charges. Can anyone answer me this? I have singed on with a CDL training school. Of course the school says my misdemeanor charge would not keep me out of a company but I want to hear yalls opinion.

Misdemeanor charge and convicted 8 years ago. The charge was for a box of ammo in the trunk of my car while driving through Washington, DC. For that they actually charged me and convicted me.

Do you think I will have a problem getting hired?

It's really going to come down to which company you want to drive for. There will probably definitely be some companies out there that will take you on. Some are more strict than others. Try looking at careersingear or bigrigjobs. These sites have trucking companies that are hiring and what their requirements or qualifications are. Some may list misdemeanors or felonies as no no's however some will except you if they happened in a certain time frame. Keep in mind, schools just want your money and some of them will tell you anything you want to hear. Kind of like a car dealer. Good luck to you!

Here is my situation... I was with my sister visiting our Father's house in Idaho, May of '09. As we were leaving to head back home to California we were stopped by a good ole boy I.S.T. My sister is a registered medical marijuana patient in Cali because she suffers from Fibromyalgia, so she had her medicine with her. Well, long story short, Mr. Trooper smells her stuff and asks me to get out of the truck, and puts me in hand cuffs saying I am "Under arrest for DUI, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Paraphernalia with Intent to Use". We head on into the Bonnevile County police station and I am booked, pee in a cup, and give blood.

So, in Oct. of '09 after $7000.00 in attorney fees, my urine and blood tests coming back 100% clean, my sisters testimony that it was her stuff (and legally hers), everything is dropped, EXCEPT for the possession of paraphernalia charge. That the State wouldn't drop because it was in my truck and ultimately the one charge they could stick me with(Idaho is a ZERO tolerance state, and the Judge REALLY despises Marijuana).

Other than that issue I have zero accidents ever, no speeding tickets in the over 12 years, I have never pissed dirty or refused a test of any kind, and I have a very solid 20 + yr work history. Which brings me to my question, am I just S.O.L. with the major carriers till 5 years have passed and should just concentrate on O/O's, or is it possible more than a couple reputable companies will overlook it and let me prove my worth once I explain the situation?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

My guess is no big company will listen to you.Going to be very hard to find anything, I am afraid. There are too many better qualified drivers to choose from.
Sorry, just my thoughts. Try it and see, good luck to you.

The drug charges, all of them big or small, are a real big turn-off in trucking.

Somebody might give you a chance,

    call around.........

Actually, my Lawyer is going to be able to get the case dismissed on a judgment withheld, and have the court remove my guilty plea. In essence, I was arrested but the case was dismissed.

    There is some hope yet!!

I believe both of you can get on somewhere. You'll have to want it more, try harder, settle for less to start and work harder. But I'll bet there is an opportunity available.

The recent drug charges will be tough. Try some documentation to prove what happened. Keep it short and factual. Don't downplay it, hit it head on, address it and move on. Try face to face interviews, it is easier to sell yourself and they get a feel for your honesty.

Read the "good companies" and "bad companies" section on this forum and get an idea of what company you want to work for and what kind of trailer you want to pull. Don't just go to school and then try to figure out where to go. Make sure you have a plan before you invest time or money in school.

Just know that training and trucking company recruiters will do nothing but lie to you. They will let you talk about what you want and then tell you what you want to hear. Trucking is about moving freight to make money for the company. Your home time, family, paycheck and everything else comes second.

    Good luck.
