So I worked 13 yrs at Airborne/DHL, was 1 of thousands laid off back in 2009. Got hired on by Ryder when I moved to TX, drove a bobtail overnight for them to deliver Newspaper to dc's. That gig ended in a layoff as well after they switched out the bobtails for non-airbrake units and a cut in pay of almost $4 an hour to do the same job. My current job, Sysco of North TX. started out ok for first year, but the main boss starting to cut hours and wants to put us on dip pay in July. BTW, I only have class B so I drive the bobtail for Sysco. Dip pay in the bobtail is just not gonna work and my hours have been cut greatly already at least for the month of May. So my plan, Fedex has offered me a pt gig at 3:30 in afternoons til maybe 9-10pm. I figure now is maybe gonna be my best time to go to CDL school and upgrade to A, with all endorsements. I have had Haz since my DHL days, but realize that having a tanking with all combinations would possibly get me better opportunities with a brand new A licence. First question, what are my chances of getting hired on with an LTL fresh out of CDL school? I have a good work history making deliveries local and right now my driving record is clean for the last 3 years. Never a dui, never fired from my previous employers. I did apply for an ABF student driver spot in Dallas last week, but haven't checked back yet. I have applied for srudent driver for conway, but he said to call back in 3 weeks cuz it takes 4 weeks to process all applications. I would love an opportunity to get on with either fedex freight, Saia, ABF, OD and stay local. Sysco doesn't seem to want to train me for an A licence right now and I don't want to stick around for dip pay in a bobtail and like I mentioned, hours are already getting cut on the bobtail side. Any advice that anyone of you might be able to offer or your thoughts? I am willing to take the temp. pay cut at least in hours now and go work t fedex nights while I go to driving school. I get a filled up bobtail right now at Sysco on hourly pay, it's no bueno!!! They bury fkn freight bad and route stops stupid because no one really likes the bobtail side at sysco. Point being, on dip pay I would be putting in the same hours but taking home even less to do more work! I need out quick! I need my A!!!

From someone fresh (Dec 2014) out of CDL A school and having my CDL B since 1983 but only used it summer of 83. When I got my CDL A I did get ALL endorsements other than "P" as it would open more doors. Also most of the LTL jobs I saw posted asked for D&T trailers + HAZMAT and as you said might as well get tanker.

Like you good work history just not in trucking, driving record clean, etc. but I had to get a medical waiver so I could not drive out of state. That made it hard for trucking Co. to hire me as in 2 hours I could be in any of 3 or 4 states.
I was lucky a small (3 trucks) heating oil Co. took me on for local in state drops so it helped to have tanker/HAZMAT & TWIC card. The Co. also does pool water with tank trailers and if I did not move I would have done that with them.

So I say get all endorsements with your CDL A so more doors are open to pick from and thinking if you have been using your CDL B you might be better off than I was not using it for 30+ years.
    Good luck.

When you say, "bobtail", are you referring to a straight truck?

One thing at a time. Get your A and then see what doors open for you at that point. Dont over think this stuff, you may have to go thru 10 jobs before you find 1 that you're satisfied with. O/O was the only way for me.

apply to fedex as an apprentice driver in sunnyvale even if you have to suck up the commute.

they pay for the training and you will already have your foot in the door when it's time for them to put on another city driver

Thanks for the tips and suggestions. I did apply for Fedex Sunnyvale apprentice earlier today. I wouldn't mind the drive to Sunnyvale, not all that far. I spoke with a recruiter from YRC earlier, he had some good info. He told me you need to be hired on as a casual dock worker pt and than for 3 months you will train for your class A on off days after a permit is issued. Going to a job fair at their hub next week. Maybe it will be the best opportunity for me, work overnight and get the training through YRC. I start Fedex express training next week for safety and courier program. Optimistic that the hours between both part time jobs would work out perfect but will see what YRC says. I was told overnight and weekends for the dock work while in training for CDL. Called Conway about student driver slot but recruiter was not in, made other calls to a couple CDL schools, trying to find anyone locally that offers night training or weekends, If I found night CDL training locally I would stick with Sysco to pay the bills. So far only came across Roadmasters for nights or weekends but they are in San Antonio and Tulsa, 4-5 hours from me. ABF operator told me if they are interested they will call, nothing else was said. Had a day off Sysco today and feel I made progress to get the ball rolling this past week. Had my ### handed to me 4 days in a row with how they loaded the straight truck.
