I doubt anyone in the states is going to hire you without a US drivers licence.

Can you even get a Canadian drivers licence if you are an American citizen?

No. I am a Canadian (citizen, resident and licence) and I work for a U.S. carrier. I also know of Americans working for Canadian carriers.

For this type of thing it doesn't really matter what the FMCSA says, it is what Immigration has to say that's important. As would be the case if I was driving for a Canadian carrier, I can only go Canada-US-Canada, or Canada-Canada. I cannot go US-US.

It isn't so much about the truck, it's about the legal work status of the driver.

I was a Canadian driving an American plated truck at one point. I even had to cross the border and pick up the truck everytime. The company gave me paperwork if the question ever arose about how I was getting paid and what my actual job was to prove to the border guards why they needed me and that I wasn't taking away an Americans job

There are people who do it. A member here @MexicoTrucker lives down in Mexico and drives for American companies. He's a good dude too.
