It's better than nothing. I always thought there should be a release of tank vapors away from the oil field worker, at the thief hatch. If you are going to vent to atmosphere anyway, why do I have to get gassed? Just saying.
Thief Hatch... will it kill you in the end ?

dog-c Thanks this.

They ALL hold pressure. Some of them will be hissing as you walk up and down the cat walk.
No motors at all down below. If you open all the hatches you can see the flame go down from the burn off... -
I Should mention I haven't hauled oil since April 2014...SO maybe things changed since then.

You haven't missed a thing.......in fact Shell is dumping 6500 folks because of the oil price.
Oil is expected to stay in this price range through the end of 15. -

I watched a video shot in inferred and it showed how the guy was working with the hatch open and no mask, and was completely covered in hot gases as he was working with no mask. HESS training has that video and they show it to every person who works on their sites.
I think that was extreme situation used for training to scare people. BUT....I would ALWAYS check the wind sock and stay out of the fumes or I would do what I was trained to do, leave all hatches open for about 5 min and let the tanks air out before I start getting my readings. But even that can only help so much. Those gases HAVE to be BAD SHT....
I do know one guy who died of throat cancer in ND. I always assumed he got it from checking tanks and not staying out of fumes. He worked there for 3 years before he passed and was a gas hauler in ATL for several years before that.... He got diagnosed and passed all within 6 months if I remember right. It happened real fast.
One day he said he didn't feel good and couldn't eat or keep food down....
He went home...
Text me a few days later and said he has cancer.
Several months later he had surgery.
Then shortly after he passed.
RIP THOMAS!
That's his blue truck I posted in the above pic by the tanks. I was running his truck while he was home getting medical care. Mine was broke down so he let me run his so we could both make money. Good dude for sure.
I also heard about 3 other gas haulers who went to haul oil and died of various cancers shortly after leaving ND. Some were smokers and all were old. SO its hard to say it was from the crude. But Im sure it didn't help.Stubby T Slapnutt Thanks this. -
Sorry to hear about your friend, one of my working buddies also got cancer, while working here in the Eagleford Shale. The thing I don't understand is if your going to vent the tanks to atmosphere, why not have it directed away from the Driver ? Just saying.
