Hello everyone, like many others I finally decided to join after reading for months on here. The wealth of knowledge on this site is incredible and the humor is a nice refreshment as well. I am a 28 year old father of two and have spent the last 7 years as a sheet metal fabricator. I have been studying and taking the practice tests for a few weeks now and am looking to starting school. I have already spoken with TMC and will be contacting a few other carriers as well. However, I am leaning more towards tanker over flatbed now and am very interested in Superior Carriers who has a terminal 10 minutes away from my house. Next would be Prime or Schneider Tanker but I need to make some more phone calls first.

Anyway, I'm glad to be here and thanks to everyone for all the great insider info.

Go with Superior Carriers; they're one of the best.
They only hire from certain designated schools, so call and ask which you should attend.
Prime is food grade so probably won't make near as much as with hazmat.
Schneider Bulk is ok and they have several different types of tanker work as shown on the Schneider Bulk website.
I would put Superior Carriers as a first choice then Schneider Bulk second.
Congratulations and welcome to your new career in trucking.

Thank you. Superior is definitely my first choice and I did read about them only hiring out of certain schools so I will be contacting the terminal diwn the road to ask which schools are approved and some other questions. I have visible tattoos that arent offensive but they are still there. Good idea before I had kids and got my butt whipped into shape and now i couldnt be more regretful. I am trying to find out which carriers counts this as an automatic disqualification or not but I will be calling Superior to find out for sure.

The only company I know of that's a wuss about tattoos is Averitt Express. Maybe that's changed now, but the "3 headed snake" used to sweat bullets if they saw a tattoo.
The "3 headed snake" is 3 companies under the same umbrella; Averitt Express/First Fleet/First Express. They all earned the reputation.

I have read some threads like that about Averitt on here. I spoke with Superior Carriers today to ask some questions and to double check that my school is on their approved list. I will be starting at Smith & Solomon in Linden, NJ this coming Monday, the 12th.

Good; Superior Carriers is an excellent choice. No hanging around truckstops waiting for the dispatcher to find a load for you. Those hazmat/tanker companies keep rolling. These's more of them that hire new CDL grads, but Superior Carriers is right at the top of the list.

Thanks for all the feedback Chinatown. I have conpiled a small list of tanker outfits that hire new drivers, ones that require 1 year, 2 Years and so on. I am keeping my fingers crossed for an interview with SC but that it will be at least 6 weeks until I would be eligible for that so for now I am going to focus on school and not have to wait and retake any tests further delaying my new career.

    Chinatown Thanks this.

You can apply for trucking jobs during the first week of CDL school. Most have online applications. You will get job offers contingent upon completing CDL school and having the required endorsements including passport and TWIC. Best wishes; with those hazmat tanker jobs you're in the $60K - $65K + as a new driver.

    AM14 Thanks this.

Thanks for all the feedback Chinatown. I went for my passport today and then got my DOT card. Tomorrow or Friday I will apply for the TWIC. Looks like it takes a while to get so I want to get a jump on that.

    Hey good luck to you!

I have hazmat and tanker. When you go for twic card take the background and finger test for your hazmat as well since it will take a while for that process as well. Soon as you get your CDL take the endorsement too that way you're ready.
