Hello World. I'm just a guy here from Alabama that was looking to get into trucking. Been looking into it for a while and I thought I should give it a shot. However, my decision to pursue this further may hinge on two concerns I have, and I was wanting to go through a company sponsored CDL school (Prime and Roehl are my top two now, leaning towards Prime).

    1. I was arrested back in 2008 and got hit with a 2nd degree domestic violence charge. However, the charge was dropped and I was NEVER convicted. Never went to court for it, never paid any fines for it, nothing. Would that hinder me in getting on, especially getting a HazMat endorsement?

    2. For the better part of the past five years, I was an independent contractor for several companies and not an employee. It was only this year that I knew what being an employee feels like again. I have 1099s to prove my worth there. Would that hinder me as well?

Of course I have no DUIs and I'd pass a drug test with flying colors. Was worried a bit about those. Thanks in advance.

Even if you had felonies, or couldn't prove history for the past few years of work it wouldn't matter. They'll throw any warm body in a truck now days

Thanks for that, you guys! Now I'm understanding the hazmat, but I guess that hiccup in my record would prevent me from entering Canada if I were to take freight there? Also, would any of the company sponsored companies take me in with that hiccup as long as I'm truthful? Of course again, I was NOT convicted.

Most will take you no problem, I don't know about running up to canada but usually that isn't a requirement running to canada most just stick to the lower 48. You should be fine and shouldn't have to worry about anything other than passing all your tests putting in your 2 years and finding a good outfit.

Almost all the places you start with have turnover rates at or near 100% they don't pay well treat drivers like dirt, and that's where the warm bodies comment comes into play. They should all take you most look for felonies and if you have a felony they usually require they are 5 years old which in your case you weren't charged, or convicted of a felony so you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

If Prime accepts you, go with flatbed or tanker division.
Celadon and Evergreen Transport have their own schooling in Alabama.
Use your W-2 forms to show proof of employment or tax returns where you filed taxes.

    Southern Refrigerated Transport
    Millis Transfer
    both probably take you.

Would 1099s work in lieu of W2s? 1099s are the independent contractor equivalent of W2s.

Being arrested will not prevent you from doing anything. You are innocent until proven guilty. If you haven't been proven guilty (by being convicted) it is as good as never even happening. Courts and law enforcement can see the arrest, but I doubt any other country or background check can.

I was arrested for a half dozen felonies. I wasn't convicted of any of them. I have a haz mat endorsement and my background check is clean as a whistle.
