I have always signed at the end of the day, just like punching a clock, although I can see Studes reasoning, I guess you buddy should have told them that signature was his "pretrip sig, and he will sign it again at "post trip" lol.
snowwy Thanks this. -

Won't they buy the "I was just getting some of my work done ahead of time" story?
What if you signed a whole week's worth ahead of time? Or filled in duty status lines ahead of time?
Yeh, it all makes sense now! -
Because the law says you must sign within 24 hours. See FMCSR's 395.8 (a) (1) and 395 (2) (d) (5). The first one says you must record duty status for each 24 hour period. The next reference states you must include Driver's signature/certification. Very simple.

Here, I found the Guidance you can show any Leo about signing your log.
In Part 395 Hours of Service of Drivers.
Question 24- When must a driver complete the signature/certification of the drivers record of duty status?
Guidance.
In general, the driver must sign the record of duty status immediately after all required entries have been made for the 24- hour period. However, if the driver is driving at the end of the 24-hour period, he/she must sign during the next stop. A driver may also sign the record of duty status upon going off duty if he/she expects to remain in off duty until the end of the 24-hour period.
It's all listed in the FMCSR site so it's the LAW. -
Thanks GH, was looking for that guidance but couldn't find it for the life of me.
