Hello my local community college has a 240 hour class a cdl program. 8 weeks. Whereas a trucking school AAA school of trucking is also around here and has a 160 hour program(but costs 400 dollars more) Which would be a better route?

Depends on you, i went through a private school that was 160hrs but we only had 3 people. So we got a lot more time in the seat than 160 hours. I think i ended with 234 hours logged. It's really up to you on how quickly you can catch on and if you can swing the added cost.

Because of your past problems, go to the community college program. This 240 hr. certificate will help.
I agree with Gunner75 if you have a squeaky clean past. -

Chinatown Thanks this. -
CC is where you want to be. Private might be a bit sketchy.
Remember School is just to break you enough to ride a truck for the State Test, your real education begins under your first actual dispatch.Mtn Gal, TequilaSunrise and Chinatown Thank this. -
I remember TransAm recruiter stated they will hire you. Follow through with an application during the first week of school.
Also, submit more applications to any company you like at the same time. This gives you plenty of time to find something before graduation. Apply for hazmat endorsement; probably will be approved. Even pulling reefers sometimes will get a hazmat load such as paint.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Paint in winter time is a valid reefer load. Remember we heat em too. 60 degrees in a dakota -40 is a trip.

Community College gives you College Credit for the schooling. Those credits will come in handy if somewhere in the future you decide to get a degree. It is my belief with the explosion of quality online schools that truckers are in great position to take advantage of learn things. Knowledge added is never a waste.

Do take care if you choose to take student loans.
There is approximately 1.4 trillion in student loan outstanding to which the Nation is liable for. 35% have defaulted, another 20% stand to default but are being held off by two things, undischargeable and paper tricks to essentially have a zero payment a month.
Ive done several of them in my life at different points and watched colleges over build the last 10 years on the backs of the students.Mtn Gal Thanks this. -
the companies I applied to said get your cdl.....the training starts at the company.....schools are there to teach you to pass your test...that's why I went 160 hr over tech school...plus tech school wanted me to take an entrance exam....I've got a masters degree....and they wanted me to take an entrance exam for truck driving.....really??
Mtn Gal and TequilaSunrise Thank this.
