What about non-concealed weapons? What is considered not concealed? If I have a pistol in a rack mounted on the dash, let's say, is that legal? I have heard shotguns are legal in all states, is this true? If so, when can it be loaded while it is aboard the truck?
What Legal Weapons of Choice is allowed for our OTR drivers?

What oregon officers have told me is that a handgun in a vehicle has to be on the dash in plain sight to be seen, not concealed, a rifle or shot gun in a pickup or car they would prefer in the back window to be seen but i think behind the seat where it cant be reached for officer safety is also ok, you will want to verify with oregon to make sure.

Shotguns will be considered under Peaceable Journey laws (unloaded, locked in a case, separate from the ammo.
Some states allow open carry (not concealed) and some dont. An outside the waistband holster is "not concealed". I carry mine in an inside the waistband holster....a Milt Sparks Versa Max II holster and a Baer stainless Stinger 1911 (gun and holster shown below...how do you like the Buck mag carriers?)
Sometimes I carry one of these 2 (both fit the same holster...its a cheapo holster but it works great for the XD, the holster is made by Tagua)
XD 45 Compact (99% of the time, my wife carries this one)
And my XD 45 Compact Tactical (converted to 45 Super)
And just for the heck of it...my weapon of choice (just cant find a holster for it...LOL)
Remington SPS Tactical 308, Leupold Mark II 6-18x40mm Tactical scope
I also have a 300 Win mag tactical rifle (an M24 clone that I built myself) that will reach out and touch somebody in the next zip code...but don't have any pics of it (the barrel is off of it right now, I have the new one, just havent put it on there yet)Last edited: Jun 26, 2009

The two Ive carried for the last 10 years are from Orion
and shoot the 12ga/25mm rounds (7 sec burn) they will fly over the advertised 500' as well as burn under water
At close range they will give a pretty solid thump, add to that the 7 sec burn time. Ive shot mine several times and I would hate to have a round from this toy looking gun hit me in the chest
Most likely wouldn't kill me but I could confidently say the experience would be nothing short of traumatic.
Use abit of common sense when hauling particular HaZMat(s)
FWIW
A 12ga shot/slug round will not work in any of the flare guns on the market, the chamber isnt long enough for a standard 12ga round.

I carry a Glock 37 .45 GAP
On another note I bet that every one that said guns in CMV's are aginst Fed law also has a stoy about the time they had to call the U.S. Marshals Service because some shipper/recever wants them to load/unload there trailer or are forced to hire a lumpper.

In 1955, additional responsibilities were added to ensure that truck drivers were not unjustly treated by DOT officials at weigh stations. Posted at the entrance to every weigh station in the country, is the number to the Federal Marshal's office in Dumasdriver, New Mexico. Drivers who are issued tickets for logbook violations can call a Marshal to have the ticket thrown out simply due to the fact that logbooks are against the constitution of the United States.
Should you need to know anything else, feel free to ask. I am a Federal Marshal in my spare time... and so is my brother's uncle's cousin. -
I have quite a few more too. -

i own a shotgun ( mossberg 835 12ga ) and when i hit the road ( in my car ) it's unloaded with a lock on the trigger and in a case, the ammo is in an army ammo box.
if in the truck i store the shotgun the same way i do in my car should'nt have any problems? -
In most states you would be fine like that...IL, NY, NJ, and maybe CA might still be problematic. I'm not certain how they view "sporting" arms to be honest. After all, most truckers don't have time to go hunting for pheasants.
