I took the Alabama CDL Learners Permit test today. I cannot comment how it's done in other states. You will need the completed DOT physical examination form (the long form,) SSN card, and current license. This would be a good time to get your endorsements if you want those, too.

Prior to being assigned to a computer, I was told there are 50 questions on the General Knowledge, 20 questions on Air Brakes and 25 questions on the combination tests. A passing score is 80 %, therefore, you can't miss too many questions on the air brake and combination test. You can do the math to calculate the No. of questions you can miss and still pass.

Once my computer was assigned, I was instructed that I could skip any question on the test and move on to the next question without forfeiting the points. In other words, skipping a question will not count towards the final score. While taking the individual tests and once you reach 80% (or a passing score) you're done and move on to the next test.

HOWEVER, if you see questions that you previously SKIPPED, that means your out of the randomly selected test pool questions. At this point you must answer the previously skipped questions and a wrong answers will count towards your final score. Sound confusing?

The General Knowledge and Combination tests were rather easy. The Air Brakes test is more difficult because of a strong play on the answers being very similar. I suggest one dedicates additional time to the Air Brakes chapter. Read and read anew and have a good understanding of the material that is required to pass this test.

Costs: $23.00 - just for the honor of taking the test. If You Pass all three tests, you are charged again, this time for $22.00 for a 30 day temporary license. The hard copy will be mailed to your HOME address.

Once you get the laminated CDL Learners Permit by mail, you have one year to complete the remaining portion of the CDL process, eg., road, pre-test and skills test.

The latest AL CDL Manual is dated December 2005, and available online in PDF format. I studied the PDF file on my computer, but it would have been better had I got off my butt and picked up a manual at the DMV. Having the CDL manual, IMHO, is easier to study than reading a PDF on a computer.

Oh yeah, I passed and I am the proud recipient of a CDL Learners Permit.:biggrin_25525:

Oh yeah, more more thing... just because you took the CDL Learners Permit test at your local DMV does not mean you go back to the same DMV to take the skills portion of the test. Only certain DMV offices in Alabama can do the skills test.

I hope this information may help others in Alabama who are considering taking the test and driving for Prime.

That's a great deal you have in S. Carolina. I think Texas was $70.00 when I was entertaining the thought of working for Stevens Transportation.

I'm kind of surprised that all states haven't raised their driver license fees a lot. Most of them need money and we all need to drive, whether by car, motorcycle, or CMV. It seems they aren't taking "full advantage" of a pretty steady revenue stream. But of course, if you pay less than Texas, that's a good thing! Hopefully, SC won't see this post!
