How strict is the pet policy at Prime? Their website says 30 lb limit, which I think is a bit strict. My dog is about 40 pounds, so I'm concerned that a mere 10 pounds might force me to look into a new starter company...

I think that 30# is the basic rule of thumb for most all the companies that I have researched that allow dogs..
Now I dont know that they actually weigh the dog though
But it does seem like it would be pretty hard getting in and out and fairly crowded for a dog over 30# IMO..Last edited: Dec 7, 2012

Thats what I'm wondering...how do they determine the weight of your animal? Veterinary records, or do they weigh it themselves? I hope its not the latter, because I could probably convince my local vet to "smudge? the numbers a little bit if I asked, lol

I have on occasion taken my Golden Retriever (who happens to be black in color) on my truck. It does get crowded and it does take some work (and a ramp) to get him in and out of the truck. He doesn't like it much anyway I found out.

Thirty pounds is a practical limit. You're going to have to get the animal in and out of the truck multiple times a day... lifting the pooch to shoulder height. Having them jump onto a concrete ramp is dangerous to the animal.
Consider something else... it's almost impossible to get any kind of veterinary care on the road - except via Petsmarts. Most vet offices in outer BFE don't have a doctor available except during very limited circumstances. -
If it's only 10 lbs more then what their policy states, they won't say a thing.I think is what Prime is saying they don't want any big dogs like a shepard or doberman.Chances are they had bad exp with big animals in their trks. What kind of dog do you have?
snowman1 Thanks this. -
He's half pit...and cant figure out the other half is. Possibly some kind of hound. Found the poor fellow living at the end of my driveway after someone had shot him with buckshot and broke half his ribs. But anyway, he isnt what people would call a "big dog" at all. When he stands on all fours, his head barely reaches my knee level. If I make him stand on two legs, his head barely reaches my hip. I'd doubt he is 45 pounds even if he was wet.

Most companies also stipulate no agressive breds... See-Pittbull...
