Just to clarify. At Prime we have instructors and trainers. All instructors are trainers, not all trainers are instructors.
Instructors take students with permits and teach them to drive. There is some "training," but the focus is safely operating a truck in preparation for taking the test. Our students move real freight, under real conditions, on real roads and terrain in the lower 48 states, with the instructor sitting right next to them. BTW, they're not just thrown into it. I good instructor starts with a couple hours and gradually increases, and the instructor may take over and drive more challenging terrain in the first week or so as it can sometimes overwhelm a student.
Trainers take drivers with CDLs (trainees) and teach them how to run the truck. Pick ups, deliveries, paperwork, trip planning, company procedures, etc...
Instructors have to have more than a year of accident/incident free driving.
