    $50-$60/week isn't "a ton of reefer fuel", but it adds up (as above).

    Unless they pay extra fuel surcharge by the reefer hour, I don't see how that has anything to do with reefer fuel. All the carriers I've researched pay it by the mile. Fine for the truck; absolutely irrelevant for a reefer.

    Ok. We get two fuel surcharges. One for the truck and one is for the reefer. If we can agree on the clarification that we are compensated for reefer fuel. And in some cases we actually make money on reefer fuel depending on the cost of fuel.

    That makes more sense. Now I'll just write them off as requiring too much work on settlements. That'd be extra hassle on settlement confirmation.

    Jayhawker, some guys have an opinion and just don't want to change it. I get it, I do the same thing sometimes. For example, I will never ever admit that the Red Sox are worth a ####.


    Anywho, OP, Prime is a great company, but I might recommend an alternative option: drive for Werner or Swift for a year, and learn the ####e companies. Then, when you get to Prime, you know how much better off you are. :)

    Our trucks are nice (mostly), and you can make decent money out of the gate. Company guys have it easier than lease guys, but some folks make it work. I loved company, but am struggling a little lease side.

    Reefer? Roughly a penny a mile. That's nit noy compared to say tractor fuel costs. A little background... Prime used to pay for reefer fuel, but when fuel costs went up, they decided to change how they did it. Sales went after customers for reefer fuel surcharge, Prime kicks in the first tank fill as long as it's done within a few hours of hooking on, and the IC kicks in for the rest. At the same time, they got rid of the TK fuel guzzlers, bought Carrier reefers, and invested in custom programming to cut how much fuel as being burned. One thing that happened REAL quick is Prime's usage of reefer fuel in gallons went down by almost half... not cost, but total reefer gallons used. Amazing, huh? Practically speaking you don't pay more than $20 or $30 most weeks, it just depends on what kind of loads you're getting.

    As far as truck speed is concerned, we can go as fast as the governed limit. That's 65 in lease and O/O trucks, and 62 in company trucks. Since we're subject to dispatch in Canada, you can't go faster than 65 up there because of the speed limiter laws. That being said, our owner pays us to go slower to cut his costs on the company side, and the benefits are immediately obvious on the IC side.

    Strangely enough, yes we have. We talked about maybe buying another truck and trailer (hopper) and just adding to his business with it. However, after much argument, I yielded to his knowledge and experience. He suggested that maybe I drive OTR for a few years with a mega or regional carrier, just to dip my feet in and see if I truly would like it as opposed to buying another truck and trailer and putting significant financial stake in my wandering behavior.

    So we both figure the best idea would be to play with someone else's marbles before going all in with our own.

    Not looking at any lease programs, strictly company positions. What are the other companies you mentioned? Any good flatbed carriers?

    As with most "entry level" jobs anywhere these days, even government jobs are beginning to require 3-5 years experience. And, as I'm learning now, I really just can't handle office environments. When I can, I stay out in the shop where I'm at now.

    I put my application in early last Monday (6/30) and hadn't heard anything back from the recruiting department. I gave them a ring today just to see how it was progressing. The lady I spoke with was nice and told me my recruiter (of whom I've never actually spoken to) is on vacation for the rest of this week. Figured that was fine and was willing to leave it at that but the lady (I feel bad for forgetting her name) said she'd check on it real quick. She got back to me inside of a couple minutes and said I had too many jobs in the past year, 4 to be exact including where I'm at now. I can see where that would be alarming for most places so I'm not angry about it, but I just made sure she knew I was being upfront with her and the company. She encouraged me to apply again around November when a few of those old stints fall off for the past year.

    I'm just kinda bummed I guess. Two of the four jobs were temporary stuff while I looked for something better.
