Could anyone talk about jumping gears while shifting up? I was told it would help my fuel mileage. Bringing her up to 1500 in 7th to knock it right into 9th at 950, is this a good thing to do? Better to jump them like this or go through every one at 1200? Midroof Freightliner, if it makes a difference.

Progressive shifting through all of the gears has been shown to use the least fuel, using a moderate level of turbo boost. Winding the engine up to 1700 and slamming it into 9th - especially with a heavy load, strikes me as a way to put a lot of wear on an engine, and tear up a transmission.

Watching my tires and keeping the turbo down under 12psi got me about 9 -9.3mpg for the past few days. The only gear I run out is 9th because 10th lugs too much under 55.

    dieseltrooper Thanks this.

What type of mpg will get you the bonus, does it vary at all according to the division and freight or is it a generic blanket number someone came up with?? Looking at joining prime in a couple of weeks. Have seen skateboards get better miles as a company driver, I am set up to run reefer. Just want to make a good decision. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

7.5 mpg week over week is the floor. That's pretty easy to get in the reefer and tanker fleets. Not so much in flatbed because of the lousy aerodynamics of open deck cargo.

Get a tenth over 7.5 mpg, and the fuel bonus starts there at 0.1-cpm. Add another 0.1-cpm for every addition 0.1 mpg you achieve. I think it caps out at 6-cpm. I think those are the correct numbers. Its been awhile!

It went up kinda recently. For the flatbed division you need to get over 7.75 for the fuel bonus.

They ran Stan the Man doing the 7.5 mpg "muzac" spot on the reefer dispatch waiting queue last week. Still 7.75 mpg shouldn't be that hard to get to.

It's 7.75 on the reefer side as well. Stan's Muzak is outdated. I have no problem hitting the numbers when I am out toting one of our Prime trailers. 8+ is easy to get, 9 is doable if I exercise care. Running these Wally World runs is a different matter. All back roads and city driving, I hover in the low 7s.

No it really shouldn't be that hard to do even running above 60mph if a person is mindful about how much throttle is being used. I still say a lot of these Prime trucks are broken.
