If you are really 18, you may need to wait just a bit !!!!!!

It is true you might have to wait a while. If you were planning on going over the road, I believe most companies will require you to be 21, some require 23.

Yeah, sorry man at 18 most insurance companies aren't gonna let you go OTR. Besides the fact you have to be 21 to cross state lines. You're old enough to get your butt shot up in Iraq, but you ain't allowed to cross a state line in a big truck! Makes perfect sense don't it!!!

Don't mean you cant work local. Keep the faith, get some local experience for a year or two. By the time your 21 you can find a local OTR company that will send you out for a trainer for a few weeks, it wont cost you a dime, and you sure as hell wont have to sign a frigging commitment contract with the crap companies.

thanks for the replies everyone! yeah i know I gotta be the magical 21 before anyone will even consider me for a job, but the reason im wantin to git my CDL now is cuz all the BU!!$#!T comin down the pipeline in DC that states if i want to git my CDL on my own, and let my uncle be my instructor, i got to do it before april 16th or somethin, if not, then my dad or uncle cant teach me and let me drive there truck for the test, ill have to have a "qualified teacher" teach me what my Dad and Uncle have been doin THERE WHOLE ADULT LIVES!!!!

so where do yall think is a good place to git my class A locally? EVERYWHERE wants me to be 21! i know of 20 freakin places thatll hand me a B cdl on a silver platter but not a "A"!!!! concrete trucks, dump trucks, school buses, no problem! but a gravel truck or any other its, "21, NO EXCEPTIONS!" it make no sense! im sure i could destroy just as much property and kill just as many people with a straight truck as a combination! LOL! all kiddin aside, im a VERY safe driver! absolutely CLEAN drivin record, no accidents, tickets, or otherwise, thanks for the help and helpful input yall! :D

Sorry but you are going to have to wait until you are 21. No school or company is going to touch you till then. The insurance would never permit it. Thats why the rules are being changed. To many people have been trained by Grandpa, Dad, Uncle and trained wrong. They did it wrong so they taught you wrong. What is right in the book is not what works best in the real world. But it is how you have to learn to do it.

What is a "qualified" teacher? One who has a BA or a Masters? If these schools have to have "qualified" teachers as in college educated then there will be a lot of schools shutting their doors! The only requirements these schools have is a certain amount of years of experience, no DUI, no tickets or accidents or be squeaky clean! It's not the same as teaching high school or college, well the high school part maybe! I didn't have to do anything different except to take the teachers medical exam in GA for some stupid reason. The only difference between that and a DOT was an xray!

So your dad and uncles are ok but I think what you are referring to is they have to work for a "qualified" school! If that's the case forget going to one of these bottom feeder mills and hit up your local community college or tech school and spend thousands less than a mill and get a better schooling.

And if you want to do OTR you have to wait till you are 21. BUT you can do local and cross state lines that way if you aren't going over the 100 air miles rule like if you live in DE or DC or where the states are small and 100 miles is across 3 or 4 of them! Yeah I know some people think you can't cross state lines but they need to read the rules a bit closer. What if you live in VT,RI NH and it's 60 something miles from one side to the other?

Let your family get you to where you can pass the road and written test and let you drive around the house for a while! Get the CDL NOW and then get the driving down better but I bet you can do a better job than some of these driving mill graduates!
