Work history

I'm in the same positon with the past 3 years not working and a spotty record before that. In my case on disability but thinking about signing up for school now because the state wants to pay for it. I'm thinking if I have to drive a straight job locally for some time after school I'll do that but given my siuation I might not even get the chance to do that until I can put together some steady full time work doing anything even stocking supermarket shelfs. I'd actually be willing to do that for awhile, then try getting into driving straight jobs, and then think about tractor trailers. My concern is if I go to school now but then do something completely unrelated for a year or so before actually doing any paid driving how that looks?

 

By that time, you might not want to drive no more, and you might actually get a job that allows you to intergrate into regular normal society.....could be the best thing for ya...

 

Funny how time changes outlooks. We are friends with a family where the wife works, in fact has a "high power" job, and her husband has been a stay at home dad for years. He has his masters in philosophy, (which IMHO is a waste in itself. . .) Anyhow, when their first one was born, they were both working their butts off. When the second one was born, they were both working their butts off.

Then the wife got promoted to this high power job, and they decided they didn't want their kids raised by day care. They made the choice that he would stay home and raise the kids. Works well for them.

I used to sort of wonder about a guy who did this. But the older I get, and the more I see of kids today, and the more I see of THEIR kids, the more respect I have for him. And for her.

Don't waste your money and time on the school right now. Try to get something where you can stay at a job for a few years, THEN look into trucking again. If you go through school right now, then you need to make a commitment to going with driving as soon as you get out.

The reason for this is that most likely you won't find any company that will hire you without experience, unless your schooling is very recent. What you might do, is contact some local companies or owner operators to see if they could put you on right out of school. But if you can't get a pretty firm commitment on a job because of your work record, then going through the school is just going to be a waste right now.

Eagle, I just re-read your post. You might have problems in getting through the company and the DOT physicals if you have a disability. But then you might not. It makes me wonder since the state wants to put you through school. But whatever, I would make those contacts I mentioned FIRST. Even though the state is paying for your schooling, why waste your time if it just isn't possible for it to happen.

If your disability is over and done with, and is well documented, I don't think that would be a problem for you. You can show WHY you haven't worked in a while, and have the proof to back it up.

 

Not everyone will bust your balls over something like that. It's great that you took on that challenge, and gave those kids a chance to heal and develop a better take on life than what they probably had prior to you coming into their life. Way to go!

 

listen dude, i am a habitual ball buster. get used to it. welcome to the trucking industry and almost any trade you enter. its nothing personal and its all for a good laugh. and if you were to ever PM me with a question or anyone for that matter i'd always try my best to help out.

now for the emotional part of my post. i wish had a father figure growing up. my dad was a piece of #####. i dont want to get into it any further this isnt the oprah winfrey messageboard where we talk about our feelings.

with that being said you did good and should be proud. no one could get threw to me when i was younger.
