    Work history

How important is the work history for getting a trucking job. I have not worked for the most part since 11/05. My wife went back to work and I stayed home with the kids. Will this create a problem for me entering the truck driving career? We are at the point where my wife wants to stay home and I want to work.

thanks for any and all help,
    sherd

Nope, you just say you were unemployed for such and such months.

Well, this really could be a problem. Their first thought is likely to be, "were you home, or were you in prison." And since the law says they have to go back for X number of years on employment history, I'm just not sure how this would play out.

If you are thinking of going to a trucking school, before you sign ANYTHING, talk to several different trucking companies and get their take on it. Keep in mind that a trucking school would probably tell you it would be no problem, but remember they are looking at wanting your MONEY to attend the school. You really do need to do some deep checking on this before spending your money.

And the best place to do that checking is with the companies you may be applying with on down the road.

    Good luck.

I was definitely not in prison and a simple background check will verify that. I have a solid work history beyond that time frame including working 2 part time jobs, my on business and going to school fulltime all at the same time. To me politicians and recruiters are the same. They tell you what you want to hear so that they can get what they want. If I don't have it in writing, I don't believe them, and even then I'm still not very trusting of them.

A few years ago I did a ride along with a friend on a on a 1000 mile trip hauling cattle. So, I have a feel for what I'm getting in to.

You may have to get verifications from family members on what you were doing., but being off for 5 years might be a problem getting hired.

With the unemployment problems i am suprised some are as picky at times.
I know a few guys that went to school who past work history was not so good.
They could'nt find a decent company even though some of their work history wasn't their fault.

It can. Make sure you can account for times when you are unemployed and when you get the dates right put it in a resume and don't go by memory.

I have years of jobs that no one can call back and verify employment. When they ask why I tell them all those companies are out of business......What does a person do?

Like I say, most trucking companies what a 20 year old with 30 years of experience who is not only a grandfather of 6 but still a virgin. Good luck finding that!

I know I might have to take a job with a crappy company for the 1st year. I know I have to pay my dues. I just don't want to get the CDL and be left without any possible work. I guess I'll have to call some companies and see what they say.

Hmmmm, seems like I heard that somewhere before.

Just so you know, I was NOT suggesting that you had been in prison. I was just mentioning that it is one of the first things that some folks will think with a five year blank in your work history.

    Don,

I never took it that you were suggesting I was in prison. You just stated what I expect a company would think about a man missing from the work force for 5 yrs. no worries.
