I attended trucking school and obtained my CDL. I was finishing my training program through one of the major trucking companies when I decided they were probably going to get me killed on the highway with their "blind leading the blind" training hours so I left. As I left the rep from the company told me they would have to report my failure to complete the program to the DOT. Now I am confused about the status of my license. I know the state of CA considers me a class A driver, but what about federal regulations? Also, what is a safe way to get real, usable experience from someone who knows what they are doing? I respect the fact that drivers should be properly trained. I am a female and I don't want pretend I know what I am doing just because I can drive the truck forward and know to slow down around curves...

Are you sure they did't say DAC?
-
yes. in fact i pulled my DAC and it doesn't have anything on it. only the drug screen. i wanted to make sure they didn't try to say i had abandoned a load.
-
There's no way they can pull your CDL. The most they can do is report you on the DAC/USIS which may be a problem. They can also come after you for payment for the school. What's done is done. What you have to do now is look to complete your training and that will require some work on your part. It sounds like you went to the large bottom feeders that call the driver trainers mentors. Companies like that go out of their way to ruin drivers by reporting what they can. It's a racket so the best bet is to find a company that doesn't buy into all that cr*p.
I believe your best bet is to download a list of trucking companies in your area and get out and talk to them personally. Then you can explain your situation face to face to where you'll have a better chance at getting a shot. Any time a company reads a job application and sees any negative points they just pass it on.
You can try smaller companies and/or local companies. You never know those jobs may turn out to be better than OTR. Anyway you look at it you've got to do some leg work and fight off the bad the company may have reported. Don't get discouraged and keep going after a career and do it with a positive courteous attitude.pinktires Thanks this. -
i paid for the school in cash, so they can't say i never paid. and i would definitely agree that "bottom feeder" is an excellent term for this company
-
That's good that you paid for the school only because they won't come after you now. But I can pretty much guarantee that they will put a bad mark on your record. If they don't then all you have to do is find another school or another path to get a job. A good accredited school will assure you a good qualification. It's what the insurance companies look for. You'd think the trucking companies make the decision to hire or not but just about all the time they take the insurance company's word.

You failed to mention when this happened.
They may not hit you DAC right away, it may take time !!!!!
Have you checked into the new driver training requirements ?? I'm not sure if they are in effect yet...............
Good Luck !! -
i left the "training program" in dec. of 2008. i thought about the possibility that it simply hasn't shown up yet, but it's been quite some time.
also, what new qualifications you are talking about? are they federal? DOT, NHTSA, FMCSA, YMCA? Kidding on that last one, just wanted to see if you were paying attention. so many hands in the pot when it comes to regulating transportation, yet for all the fuss companies like the one i worked with are still allowed to put untrained drivers on the road. -
Well they might have not put the neg. on your record, which is cool for you,i would think -
Pinktires, here is your status. You are a Cl. "A" license holder with less than minimal experience, IE the experience you got while in a short training period. As long as you have a valid license with a valid medical card, you can go trucking. The fact that you left the training company early doesn't mean you are "suspended" with the Feds. That's hogwash. If you are still interested in this biz, then ask more questions and keep looking. Good luck.
pinktires Thanks this.
