first of all hello to everyone I am new here and find the place very informative so far so thanks. now my situation.

My father in-law is a company truck driver for the last 8 years with a petroleum company, getting paid around $1 a mile. He has talked to people that are owner operators that work with the company and they are running a minimum of $4 a mile. Now he has gotten enough information that he wants his own truck and work with the same company. I already own a car dealership and a real estate company on the side and having a trucking company on the side sounds great so I was thinking of buying 2 trucks and getting around 4 drivers running them for a petroleum company. He has talked to me about all the requirement and detail a truck and driver need to have to work there. Here is the problem.

Do petroleum companies pay this much?
Would anyone hire my trucks and drivers?
If they don't hire my trucks who will and still pay close to the same pay?

All around I have everything working and ready except where I can get good paying work for my drivers and truck. well that's about it. thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Start with one truck and see how it goes. You can always expand later if the $$$ is there.

You need to talk to the company. Will you be a contractor or separate company with your own numbers? Who pay's insurance? Haz-mat carriers pay a small fortune because of the risks.Your trailer or theirs? If theirs who is responsible for maintainance? Any company illing to take you on will discuss all options ith you. Give them a call and set up a meeting. Ask to talk to 5 or so of their current O/O's.If everything checks and you still want to invest then look for a truck not before. 1 truck to start and see if the business model fits you.

I agree with the other drivers buy one truck and see how it goes. If you have any problems with drivers one truck can't pay for two. If they are actually paying 4 dollars a mile thats really good. I haul cattle and it pays around 3 dollars a loaded mile. I figure I need at least 1.40 to 1.60 a running mile to keep things going, so 4 dollars a loaded mile would cover that and then some. Your fuel trucks will require more insurance cost, but probably not that much.

thanks for the information tazz, I wasn't too sure if it was to preemptive to ask about a job when I didn't have anything in place to get started the day afterward. The company he was talking about lets me rent there trailer for a percentage, they pay for my insurance, they contract me so they keep track of the numbers. All around they do the business i just provide the truck and driver and we all get to live in a house and eat another day.

semicrazy81 thanks for the information on the cattle. Same here I have gotten it down to being paid 1.50 a mile to keep my truck running smoothly and paying my driver a modest paycheck. I am always looking for more places that pay that well just in case I need to move my truck in other directions if anyone know of any that would be great, always need a backup plan.
