Thanks for the info everyone. I hopped down to the local office and applied for my card no problem. Should arrive in 3 weeks.

I think these guys are giving you good advise. I will never hurt to have one. You may not use it now, but it will help you in the future.

    Good Luck,

    Larry

My company said I should really get one. I already have been fingerprinted and such for my HazMat and that process is underway. I don't really need the HazMat anymore as I was just getting it to get a Job before I found this one. So I read that the Background check will be valid for TWIC , but I can't find out how to disclose that I am already undergoing the Background check. I also notice there are no enrollment centers within 250 miles of me!
I assume they use the Coast Guard offices of something.

Anyway does anyone know of a way to avoid having to go to the enrollment center preliminary? Maybe has anyone in a similar situation living far away from a center can relate how they were able to obtain their TWIC.

AS far as I know the application must be done in person

I did it with drivers ID and SS card.

I had my class A permit with me anyways which helped, as well as my DOT medical card which is recognized as a federal document. I had my birth certificate just in case because my federal, state, and local proof of identities have different names and gender on them.

You can do a pre-enrollment online, but that just saves you having to fill out all the info when you go to the enrollment office. I did that, then went to the Wilmington, NC office, about a 4 hour drive, one way.

I have a passport card, so that's what I used for my ID.

I don't know if having my HazMat and Passport helped, but I just checked my card status, and my card is ready for pick up. I only went to Wilmington a week ago, Friday the 13th. One week seems pretty fast.

yes this is the way it is. it can be due to birth dates, you know, how many people born in a certain month may be responsible for the long wait or short. when i went, i took all of "about 3 weeks". when others have gone, it took over 2 months.......also, check the expiration date of your TWIC card. you want it to be 5 years from the day you applied for it.
