Hi all, OK I'm racking my brain trying to find the "right" way to start a pre-trip inspection. i have looked on other sites and from what I'm seeing no one does it the same way. From my understanding it has to be the same way. Than again I'm not sure. Even in the DMV manual it really isn't to clear about when to do what. I have been looking and looking most sites give me the steps but none are clear on really what order to go in. If anyone can give me or know somewhere that i can find a thorough pre-trip inspection i would most definitively appreciate it thanks all drive safe.

There is nothing saying you have to do your pre-trip in a particular order. You just need to cover it completely. Break it down for yourself. Check the motor and motor components (alternator, starter, etc...) check all your hoses, check all your fluids, check all of your suspension components, Brake components, stuctural and components (frame, fifth wheel, king pin, cat walk, welds, mounts, bushings etc...) Tires and wheels, axels etc... Drive components, u-joints, drive shafts, airbags, level arms. Go over your entire air system doing you pressure test and checking lines and glads. Then do your lights, all of them including under the trailer on your rig, and turn signals. Check mirrors, windshields, horns make sure there are now body components falling off or in bad shape, mud flaps etc... I sounds like a lot but a little practice and its like brushing your teeth. Just check everything and you aren't going to fail. Good luck!

I'll try to break this down in the order I learned it and hopefully it will make sense to you. don't be discouraged, when I first heard the pre-trip and was told I'd have to know all this in my head I freaked out, but after going thought the pre-trip over and over in my head it's not that bad. It will come naturally to you after a while. Don't stress buddy, you'll get it down!

    The Pre-Trip Inspection:

I'm going to check my 4 L's, LIGHTS, LICENSE PLATE, LEAKS & LEANS.

Moving onto the engine bay, now this varies with the tractor you are using, some things are on the other side of the engine bay on other tractors.

Top of Tire- Here you would remember IDC (Inflation checked with a tire gauge, Depth no less than 4/32" on the steer tires, and Condition,) Condition you're looking for things like Divots, Missing Chunks, or Separation and even tread wear across the top of the tire. during the test all you would need to say is "Checking the top of the tire for proper inflation, making sure there's no less than 4/32" of tread on the steer tires, and I'm looking for even tread wear and no missing chunks"

now if I have missed ANYTHING here, please feel free to correct me truckers! Hope this helps you out. :)

    11. Ask the instructor if he/she wants you to get out and check your lights
    12. Then shut the ignition off and say: "That completes my pre-trip inspection".

ADDITIONAL THINGS TO DO IN REAL LIFE AFTER YOUR TEST

    1. Do a tug test with the Red button pushed in and the yellow one out to check the Spring/Parking brakes on the tractor
    2. After both tug test release both tractor and trailer (push both buttons in) and roll forward and press the brake pedal to check service brakes
    3. Roll forward some more and just apply the trailer service brakes with the Trolley bar on the steering column or dash board to check the service brakes on just the trailer.

I just typed this all up the other day for the new instructor at the school I'm doing my refresher course at because the school teaches a VERY poor pre trip.

    Be methodic about it.

That is do it like a book. Start at the top left and work your way right and then down.

Cold engine check -Right Side - Left Side
In cab check. Start at the Smokers window and work your way across and down until you get to the floor.

Get out and do your hot engine check
Close the hood, latch the left, checking that side
Go to the left checking as you go across.
    Latch the left side
Continue working your way around vehicle checking as you go in a methodical manner.

I have had the opportunity to drive many different trucks and this has worked for me.

    94, 99, 07, 08, 10 International Tractors
    07,08,10 Freightliner Columbia
    96,97,98 FL 70's
    07 International Straight Truck
    01 Mack Tractor
    97 Mack Redi-Mix Truck
    94 International Redi-Mix Truck

Just what I can remember driving. Such is life as a local driver.
