well actually...........shutting the cb off may NOT be a good idea.......and here's why........
"somebody may actually BE helping you back up".........!!!
that's right. go into any truckstop, and have a difficult time backing out of a space. there will be at least ONE trucker helping you via the radio. of course now, you are still 1,000% liable for anything that goes wrong, but generally speaking, i have "heard" and "seen" the results many times, and it's always been a GOOD help..........
just sayin.............

They'll sit there and watch a driver struggle or clip a mirror.....Then get on on the CB and say "Look at that stupid azzhat...
Used to be we all helped each other out.....
You can teach people how to drive a rig...but you can't teach them civility.... -
Being new, if I pull into an empty, or semi-empty parking lot or truck stop, what would stop me from a little practice?...If I felt I still needed some... -
but even the worst companies out there (for newbies) when backing up, they DO get help. no one (that i have seen or been a witness) will actually make you hit something. truckers do (at times) help each other out. but...........DO NOT put yourself into a backing situation you CANNOT easily get out of........for instance, at truck stops......DO NOT drive in.......!!!!!
back into a spot.........the only time you "drive into a spot"........??
is when you drive all the way thru. (we call them pull thru's) this way, you can just drive off when you leave. -

Most times the the truckstops are empty, anyway the what was the j here is, i just , um , like waiting for my load , find a big 30 hole space, no trucks around and just practice my backing up, i used too do that and pretend there docks back there, that grove of trees, then once you get comfy with that, move your trl tadems up and you be suprized how much differnt a back can be , thats how i got my cdl , everyboby was failing that day, all 6 , i was last too go , so i ask em why, said i ran over curb,so i went out and had a look see why, as she was on lunch, i slide the tadems all the way too front, it was a rental trl-truck, i passed with no problems , but it was kinda funny cause she couldnt figure it out and i wasnt gonna tell her Everett.

To the original poster , lots of info offered in all types of cases / senarios but to answer 1 of your problems that you noted in your post
"the whole 'turn the wheel the opposite way you want the trailer to go' is really messing me up ". Try Holding the steering wheel at the bottom.otherhalftw Thanks this. -

Well it was a MOBILE HOME and someone had to park it.

95% of backing is all in the set up....get the truck and trailer set up in a good position and it makes things so much easier.
