First of all, I, and many others like me, are quite frankly getting sick and tired of seeing people in these forums not only not even answering the questions put forth, but berating and raking the questioner over the coals for even asking the question in the first place!!! What do you find so impossible about simply answering a simple question with a simple answer? Just answer the #### question!!!! What you have put forth here is not an answer, it's a tirade, and nobody asked for that!!! But since you've given one, here's one of my own.
Second of all, I am also sick and tired of you purists who sit there and slam those who prefer automatic trucks and try to claim that such individuals are not "true" truckers, or worse, that they are somehow some sort of menace on the roads! Would it interest you to know that only 10% of the 4-wheelers on the road in this country have manual transmissions? No, I did'nt think so. And I know what you are probably thinking: "Well, that's cars, not trucks." You're absolutely right. But there's no way to question the fact that it does speak in a very large way not only to the popularity but to the dependability and reliability of the modern automatic transmission both in cars and in Class 8 trucks, especially in light of the fact that in the last 5 to 10 years, increasingly more and more trucking companies have started to convert some or all of their fleets to automatics, even though automatics are more expensive, just as they have always been. That having been said, as to your assertion that those who prefer automatic trucks are not "real" truckers, look up the dictionary definition of the word "trucker". According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of the word "trucker" is as follows: "1: a person whose business is transporting goods by truck 2: a truck driver". Nowhere in that definiton is there even the remotest allusion to what type of transmission the truck must be equipped with in order for the defined "trucker" to qualify as a trucker under Webster's definiton. It simply says that a "trucker" is one who TRANSPORTS GOODS BY TRUCK; A TRUCK DRIVER!!!!" So who the hell are you to summarily change the definition of what a truck driver is or is not just because you don't like automatics? Just who do you think you are? If you don't like automatics, then, fine, DON'T DRIVE THEM!! If you like manuals better, then, beautiful! Drive your manual!!!! Good on you, mate! You go with your bad truck driving self!!! But DON'T YOU DARE have the unmitigated gall and audacity to sit there and throw the automatic truckers under the bus just because you like to play with your stick all day!! You DO NOT have that right!!! And if you do so, then plain and simple, YOU are in the wrong, NOT the automatic drivers-YOU ARE!!!! You and you ALONE!!!! You see, I have driven trucks for a lot of years, and like most drivers who have been in this business for any real length of time, when I first started out in the trucking business, when I first learned to drive a truck, I was originally trained on manuals. I learned to drive them and I drove them well, with an impeccable safety record. Still do. But when automatic trucks started coming out into the industry, I decided to try them out, if for no other reason than to try to be as versatile with my skills as possible and to try to be the greatest benefit to my employer as I could be. And do you know what I found out? I found out that I actually liked automatics better. Now, bear in mind, in either an automatic or a manual, I can drive circles around any other driver on the road. Of that I have no doubt. I can drive any other driver out there right under the table. Automatic or manual. Makes no difference at all. But I personally prefer automatics. Does that make me any less a trucker? Well, I'll put it to you this way: get out on the road and go head-to-head with me, and you'll find out how much of a trucker I really am!!!! Because anyone who knows anything at all about me will tell you that automatic or manual makes no difference whatsoever-I was born to do this sort of work!!!! -

This is a pretty good link describing the use of newer transmissions which are not the standard manual type. Personally, I like to shift and always have even when I drove a car and especially my sport motorcycle, but there appear to be competing factors mentioned. There are pros and cons to both. Money savings realized on fuel is not the least of those reasons because whether one has decades of experience or is just a newbie like me the fact is companies seek to reduce expenses and maximize profits always. It's just business! So, if these new transmissions and other technologies will allow that to take place is will certainly influence their choices. Of course, driver preference, conditions, load types, weather, etc. will also play a role as well as many previous posters have commented. -
Very impressive 1st time post brugh. I feel ya. I was interested in the post cause I need a shoulder replacement. Doc is trying to delay. Says I'm too young. Instead I have to get a cordozone shot once in awhile, depending on how much I abuse it. That being said, as soon as I put put my time in, I will purchase an auto. trans. truck. Response to post #218
