How long does the process of obtaining a hazardous materials endorsement take?
    Thanks.

Typically it's a few weeks, but some states may take longer than others.
Step one is to get on the TSA website (hazprints.tsa.gov) and fill out the information and pay for the background check. Next you have to locate the office that you need to go get fingerprinted for the background check.
    Then you wait....

After a while you get a letter hopefully saying you are not a threat to national security and THEN you can go to your state licensing office and take the hazmat written test. If you pass you now can have hazmat added to your CDL.

Mine took about 2 weeks from getting fingerprinted to having the confirmation letter in-hand. Also, you can take the written test while waiting for the background check to be approved. You do NOT have to wait before taking the written test.

I took the test first. It took $65 for the State,$89.75 for TSA, a two hour hour roundtrip drive, and a couple of weeks to renew my Hazmat Endorsement.

In Ohio, at least at the main BMV office I go to on W. Broad St here in Cols., they would not let me take my written test until I had my letter. And when you get your letter sent to you, the state is also notified. So no worries if you go to the BMV without the letter.

the TSA and TBI screwed my name up. one of them had it listed correctly, the other one had my last and first names swapped. after the 2 month mark, i called. TN says up to 6 weeks for everything to clear. i called them, found out about the error, and got it corrected. the very next day i got the call from nashville telling me i was cleared to visit the dmv and get the endorsement put on my license.

by the time the letters arrived in the mail, it had been over a month since i had the endorsement on my license LOL

the test at the DMV was 3 bucks i think, and the background check was 81 bucks. while i was at the DMV i went ahead and took the doubles/triples and tanker tests as well. those 2 stay with me forever. wont have to mess with those ever again.

edit: each state is different. in Tennessee, you visit DMV and take the HAZMAT endorsement test first. (i do not know why Ohio would make you spend the money and wait then take the test when your cleared. if you fail the test, the clearance to get the endorsement is useless.) the they then give you the forms to fill out and they sand them to nashville. you are then given a paper with a number to call and you have a registration number. you call that and use that number or probably do it online to set your appointment to be fingerprinted. go to location with money order properly filled out and get processed. once it clears, they call us here in Tennessee and send the letters. when they call you, all the information is in the system and you just walk in and fill out the form then go for the new photo and that is all.

It cost me like $150 and was a couple weeks wait....

I did the DMV test then went straight to NYSP for the finger printing that day and still waited weeks for the actual license to show up..

The length of time it takes can vary due to the number of people that have to be process and how fast the fingerprinting company gets the info to TSA. It wouldn't surprise me each state has their own procedures for issuing a CDL,even tho the standards for a CDL are issued by the Federal Governement.
