I want to start driving heavy truck. I've been driving straight truck for the past three years, and I think I'll enjoy driving a tractor trailer. In Omaha I know there is JTL, but that class is over $4,000. After talking to some people that I know that employ truckers, they suggested that I check out some of the Community Colleges. Metro in Omaha has a CDL program. It's about $1,200 so it is much more reasonable. I was going to sign up for that class which starts Dec. 1st.

Now I have a change of plan. Omaha is okay, but I really want to move to So Cal. I was in Hollywood for 4 days, and the only reason why I'm back in Nebraska is because I need to finish some things up down here. I tried doing some Google searches, and I called up LA Valley college and Glendale community college. Neither of them knew what a CDL was or any colleges that would offer such a program.

So any suggestions for a Community College?

If anyone is curious as to how I've been driving a straight truck without a CDL, it's because in Nebraska you need a CDL for anything over 26,0000 lbs, but if it has Farm plates you don't. You can also legally overload it by 15% if you get a permit, but you don't need to apply for it. Goofy, eh.

    Thanks!

Look into United Truck Driving School. They have facilities in Riverside, Orange County and San Diego. Been around a zillion years and all the major trucking companies accept grads from there.

I saw that when I was googeling. I want to take it at a community college if at all possible. That way it'd be cheaper, and I can get student status in California.

    Just curious....

Why do you want to move to SoCal? Lived there for 8 years and I couldn't get out of that "state" fast enough!

:biggrin_2559: As a matter of fact, it appears that several hundred THOUSAND people are following my lead!

Check out Advanced School of Driving in Fontana. Cheap, good instruction, and you WILL pass the test or you will continue practicing until you do (for free).

The weather mostly. I've had enough of this -30 wind chill stuff in the winter, and 120 degrees in the summer with 100% humidity.

I love So Cal, so I guess it's just a matter of opinion.

Thanks for the advice! I'm all signed up. School starts the 15th of this month. The class was $1,495. JTL in Omaha is $4,040. Some of the community colleges here have programs for around $1,200. I paid for it out of pocket because I have another job, and I didn't want to sign a contract with anyone.

I read the reviews on the net, and they have some good ones! They have a hotel in Fontana that I get the student price of $45. I can live with that. They also have a lifetime placement program.

The only thing is the guy told me flat out that it's hard to get a local truck route in So Cal. I guess I'll have to start doing OTR right off the bat if need be.
