Hi all <waving> I'm starting this thread because of the wonderful insight I (and my husband) have gotten from reading others journey to the road. So I though we would document our own. My husband is Klingon and (as you can see) I'm Lady K. Here is a short intro about us:

Gary and I have been struggling finacially (who hasn’t been – right??). We tried to modify our mortgage – that fell through (struggled for almost a year with that). Gary has been looking for work and tried to start a business – neither panned out – and not through lack of work on his side!! Momma (Gary's Mom) (whom we have been caring for in the home) has gotten worse and more time/labor intensive and this finally came to light when she fell and broke her arm. Thank God it wasn’t a hip and didn’t need any surgical intervention!! I started a business and just didn’t have the time/energy/resources to promote it properly to get it really moving. So that leads us up to what we are doing now…

The changes that are happening are <drum roll please> we are going to be Long Haul Truckers!! OMG I can’t believe this is where life has lead me – LOL! We had always joked with each other that ‘when we retire’ we would get a truck and see the USA – well that is what we are doing. Not buying a truck – but driving for a company. So Momma is going into a Residential Care Home (Best thing for her I think – interaction and people with time to do so. Its also small – only 6 residents and all ‘little ol’ ladies’ – they are so cute together!!) Gary will be going first to school and training. I will be staying behind to make sure things are going well with Momma and to get our daughter and husband moved into our house. They will be living there and basically it will be ‘their’ house. SIDE NOTE – this is sort of what happened 20+ years ago w/Momma – she bought a motorhome to go traveling and we moved into her house – she came back and parked in the driveway and we lived together until now. Her in her ‘home’ and us in ‘ours’… it worked well. - END NOTE Then when we decide to stop driving (and I’m guessing this will be years down the line) the front bedroom is a mini-master and we will move into that. Its funny how life can come full circle at times :) Now once things at home get settled – I will start my schooling and training and join Gary out on the road.

It is going to be a challenge to eat (we both have had gastric bypass surgery) – trucks stop food anyone?? However I’m up for that challenge! I will learn to cook out of the back of a semi. There are mini fridges (if we have a converter) and 12v grills/ovens. Stops at Wal Marts and other food places with BIG parking lots… so we will need to be creative and inventive.

So that is our back ground story... now to continue:

Gary did his pee test today and bunches of paperwork. He didn't need to redo the drivers physical because we already did that with our PCP... it would have been less expensive though to let the school do it :) So Monday he goes in for his schooling. Which will be a good refresher - he use to be an O/O about 20+ years ago and thouroughly LOVED it!! Not so much for me - but I was the wife at home w/toddler. I loved riding with him though when I could.

So we are looking forward to this new portion of our lives. We do know it won't be all roses, in fact we anticipate that and we also plan on WORKING!! The best thing though - - we will be doing this together :biggrin_25525:

Gary will get to do the first report about that. It's TDA Educational Systems on Florin-Perkins Rd.

Linda was our recruiter and as far as we can tell she was staight up and truthful re: our questions - and if she couldn't answer our questions, she was honest about it. I liked that.

Well Klingon got sent off to his first day of school today. Coffee in one hand, protein in the other and a binder under the arm. Classroom for 2 days before taking the permit test is what we've been told... it will be mostly review for him - plus any new rules/regulations they have thought up in the last 20+ years - which I bet is quite a few - LOL! Well #2 team member will be running around with #3 (1+2=3 in other words our daughter - LOL - well I thought it was cute :biggrin_25523:) and making sure the bank accounts are in order for when we are on the road.

    AND LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN!!

Love it!!:biggrin_2559: Betcha didn't know us truckers also have at least two "invisible arms" to take care of all "the other stuff" whilst keeping two hands onna steery wheel. At least the "rest of the world" thinks we do. :biggrin_2559: But hey, everybody knows that as Momma, caretaker, etc, etc you female types have more hands than an octopus playing Texas Holdem.:biggrin_2559:

    Good luck and good miles.

Wish ya'll the best of luck. Just tell him to listen and not try to show off his prior knowledge, or he'll be disliked for being a know it all. we had some guys like that in school, and alot of guys didnt like them for that. and most important of all, BE SAFE OUT THERE.

I just had a flash of an octopus playing cards - LOL! Thanks for the good wishes - I'm waiting anxiously at home wanting to know how his first day went!

Thank you for the wishes!! One of the reasons he is going to 'school' is that it has been >20 years since he last drove... he knows that a LOT of things (rules/regulations) have changed. So I would like to think he will just listen and learn. Thanks for the advice though - I'll make sure he sees this thread :)
