I agree with Southern, they seem like a good choice.....another company I would look at is Huff & Puff in Bradyville. Small company, family run. They only take a few students a year, but I think with your military backround, you would appreciate how they run their operation.

    Southern,

Thanks for the information on McElroy. I had talked to them before, but then I read bad comments; so I wasn't sure if they were good to work for or not. I plan on or would like to pull a flatbed. I have already got applications in at Maverick and BTC Flat, but am going to put in others. I learned a long time ago, don't put all your eggs in one basket.

    Jonny,

I am going to look at Huff and Puff. I haven't ever heard of them until you mentioned it. Thanks!

Their safety dept manager goes to the schools and does the recruiting. I would call , tell them your situation ask for a tour.....I think this would impress them, especially with your background. Its a very small company and everyone knows everyone by name. Most of their fleet consists of older Internationals (I9's) and they are slowly switching over to split axel trailers like all the big fleets have used for years. I think they have some pretty high expectations, but they seem to take care of their drivers.

I started class today at TDI in Murfreesboro. It took nearly 3hrs. to get here. Normally I can make it here in an hour lol. I got to 840 and I was like wow; someone dropped the ball. Wednesday the other guys go and take the Permit test; so I'm going to use that time to call some different companies as well as Huff&Puff. Thanks for the info and be safe out there!

The other end of 840 where you exit on to I65 S was a skating ring as well, they closed down 65 near the Alabama boarder for a while today. I need to head to Greensboro on Tuesday and hope they have I40 in the Gorge cleaned up. Be safe

How was the gorge? Tomorrow the rest of the class goes and takes their permit. I already have mine; so I been trying to give some pointers and let them know what questions was on my tests'. I asked one of the instructors about Huff & Puff and he said that you have to live within 50 miles of Bradyville. The training is 12 weeks and you have to drive back and forth from home everday for 12 weeks. As high as diesel fuel is, it would cost me ALOT of money to do their training. And the training is, that you go with a trainer to pick up loads during the day, chain, strap, tarp them, then bring them back to the terminal for OTR drivers to take them to their destination. So if anyone asks that's the training as far as I was told. I think the pay is .34/mile.

The Gorge was hit and miss.....trucks are restriced to the RH lane and it was was pretty clean, just need to keep an eye on those 4 wheelers slipping and slidding in the LH lane!
I do know H & P does some local training, but I dont think the whole 12 weeks. I would call them directly, and get the poop straight from the source. I also think that there is some flexibility in that 50 mile deal. It seems some private schools are restricted as what companies they promote, I'm not sure about your school. I would not discount them too quickly......but you know whats best. Be safe on those roads!

Builders Transport? Is that the same company that use to have green trucks back in the 90's?

I went to school at Digby Truck Lines in LaVergne, TN. A Builders Transport was across the street from our terminal. One day I come in and the Builders Transport terminal was a ghost town. I heard they filed bankruptcy and got bought out. That was the last I seen of them until recently. I was wondering if they were one and the same??
