I just got my CDL yesterday, and first thing I started filling out some online applications. I applied to Central Ref., Stevens, May, Wills Shaw. That's just for starters.

My question is this, I have officially been out of work for about 2 1/2 years. I collected unemployment, and worked under the table for two years of the time. The job market where I live is horrible. Will these companies and others hold such a long gap against me?

    I appreciate any feed back.

If you have been on unemployment, you have that to prove what you have been doing for the last 2 1/2 years. You should have a 1099 from the unemployment office that you can provide a copy of as proof. I wouldn't mention anything about the under the table work.

I have a gap in verifiable employment. I filled out a couple of online apps with bottom feeder companies, just to see how things work, and didn't get any reply. As dysfunctional as these companies are reported to be, I'm not sure how to take it.

I don't have any intent of working for that type of company anyway. I'm going to get my CDL through a local community college, and look for opportunities with smaller companies where I can actually talk to a reasonable human being and explain my situation and my value to the company.

These mega-carriers are run by lawyers and accountants. Drivers are just interchangeable piece parts, so your circumstances really don't matter to them. You're just another applicant among thousands.

I had to fill out a Unemployment Gap Form and have it notarized, when I applied to Maverick and I didn't have any trouble.

there are at least a couple of things you MUST DO to prove that gap...

    1) a letter (or two) from someone other than ANY family member or relative stating how they know you , their occupation, and how long you have been unemployed.....then it NEEDS to be notarized, which usually someone in YOUR bank is a certified notary public.

    or

    2) you write up a letter, stating you were on unemployment, provide the tax form you got from the unemployment office (photo copy) then get all this notarized as well.........

but USUALLY the letter from someone that knows you works best.......

never, and i mean NEVER mention the "under the table wages"....

Sometimes the applications fall thru the cracks and they will not call you. I had that issue with the Co./School I actually got into, I followed up with a phone call and the squeaky wheel started rolling.

Yeah, I figured that could easily happen with the size of these outfits, and I filled out those applications during the holidays, so I'm sure that didn't help.

Anyway, for now I'm going to scout out the local market while I'm in school for a few months. Work around here tends to be seasonal, so I'll have a better idea what things look like when I graduate in April.

I had to fax in the unemployment letter that stated when I would begin receiving benefits. A year without income isn't looked highly upon. Luckily, unemployment is considered income so though I was out of work for a year, I still had money coming in.

Thankfully this is the first week now where I don't have to claim a week of unemployment. :)
