What is line haul?

terminal to terminal. Is the ad an LTL company?

 

Basically line haul and short haul are the same thing. You normally pull a set from one terminal to another, usually about a 500 to 600 mile trip or less.

 

well actually it depends on the company you work for and THEIR DESCRIPTION of line haul....

one LTL company i worked for, line haul was, leave my terminal, go to another terminal and either return, or stop off at as many as 3 other terminals on the way back...this was mostly all trailer switching, either single trailers or pups....usually you are home every day, but an over-nighter is certainly NOT out of the question too. this job, many of us would run (on average) about 400 to 500 miles daily (or nightly).

another "line haul" job i had was from my terminal, here in MASS down to Winchester, Va, then spend the night, and come back the next day...sometimes making a stop along the way either going down to VA, or back up here.....now some would have called this "regional" rather than line haul, as i did the very same (miles wise) from MASS to VA with another company.....it was a "regional run".....to them....

so you really need to go in person or ask them via email or phone call, what "line haul" is to them..

 

In my experience Line Haul was loaded trailer from Terminal A to terminal B, drop trailer and pick up another loaded trailer at B to A. Or sometimes A to B to C and back again. Very seldom did I load/unload. Nice gig if you don't mind the same roads over and over.

How do you think all the lines get on the road? Someone has to haul them. jk

 

yes...LTL = Less Than Truckload

TL = truckload.

but just so that you know, many TL companies i have worked for, will at times do LTL work, by making pick ups along the way to say VA like i did, and make drop off's along the way, or bring that entire trailer load to the terminal...it is just another way to keep busy for the TL companies.

 

Most ltl are hazmat, double triples required from what I noticed

 

doubles and triples are big for ltl, different trailers to different drops, etc.
