I'd rather be doing this than retail, and I had what could be considered a decent job. :/ I ask for more than a simple "No" because Rerun seems to have something of a cynical point of view. There's no way around the fact that things are going to change, but to completely disregard trucking as a viable career choice is unfair I think. It's definitely not for everyone, but there are certainly far worse choices.

Probably not a good time to make the leap and become an owner operator, but a company driver?

    Sure...why not.

Nothing wrong with getting into the biz right now. Just do your research and pay attention in school!

I agree with Gears. If you can deal with the odd hours, living in a truck, and being away from home for weeks at a time, I can't see why it would be a bad choice. Of course, everyone's situation is different. It depends on the point of view too. I don't have a mortgage or kids, and there's nothing I want to do at home that I can't do in the truck. Like I said, I had an OK job in retail, but I can make a good deal more even with starting pay as an OTR company driver, and that's just to start. Sure, rules are changing, prices are going up, and regulations are getting tighter, but that's life, and those factors are effecting everything. Ask yourself if now would be an OK time for YOU to get into trucking. It is for me.

I sure hope it is! For me and you both! And many other students or recent grads or even people looking to get into school!

In an industry with a truly incredible turnover rate maybe the best way to answer your question is to read the good, bad and ugly stories (about being new) that come up on sites like this everyday, and try and picture yourself in the same situations. That way you can use the experiences of others and your testicular fortitude to give it a try if you can see your way clear.
