Detention pay is what you might get paid for waiting for a late shipper or receiver. Might or might not get, depends on the company and the customer. Usually there is a couple of hours of grace time, then hopefully detention pay kicks in.
For example, your appointment time is 5 PM. You arrive at 4 PM. You don't get loaded until 11PM. Your company maybe pays you $10 hour detention after 3 hours. The clock doesn't start ticking until your appointment time at 5, not your arrival time at 4. The first three hours are free. From 8-11PM you get $30 to compensate you for just sitting around.Farmerbob1 and bigbyrc Thank this. -
It's what you get paid when shippers and receiver take their sweet time loading or unloading you. Policy differs from company to company, shipper to shipper, receiver to receiver, or even type of load

You WON'T get it more than you will get it. Shippers/consignees fight tooth and nail to keep from paying it. FYI, FCFS (First come, first served) you definitely won't get it.

Too bad they did not pay DETENTION PAY in High School . My youngest son would be a MILLIONAIRE

I get it after two hrs, but, if I'm local I don't get any becuase I'm already being paid hourly. But out of town, it's $75 an hr after two hours and I get 29% of that. All the brokers/forwarders who use us know that we charge detention pay, anytime a customer refuses to pay it, I close the doors. In 13 yrs, three times my boss has told me to kick the people off the truck, close and seal the doors, until he get's them straightened out.

I don't get detention pay. I get hourly as soon as I arrive at a p/u(that includes FCFS). We give our customer one hour free, after that they pay for the truck per hour. It is then up to our customer how long the truck sits at the dock. If they can collect off the shipper, we stay put. If not and they really don't need the product right now, we will be pulled. Had that happen several times. Also sat at docks for a few hours because they need the product.

We give two hours grace period also, but after the first two hours we start charging detention from the original appointment time.
