So... The Navy diagnosed me with sleep apnea. Are there any companies that would hire me with sleep apnea?

I had sleep apnea when I was hired by SNI, was upfront and honest about. I had to turn in smart card from the cpap every few months. I would guess most companies are the same. I have since tested negative with the SNI paid test so I no longer need to use or report the cpap machine/ results.

I have sleep apnea. Different companies have different rules regarding what you need to prove to show you are being compliant. You will only get a one year medical card, but as long as you have a CPAP machine that has a smart card that they can take readings off of, you will have no problems getting hired...just some extra red tape you might have to get through.

I was told by the recuiter from Swift they will hire you as long as you are being treated for it. I haven't gone to school yet and will find out about it when I get there.

Seems a bit strange to have it at 22 years old Max. But if that is what they told you. . .

I got hired by Knight while I had it. They had no problem with it.

There is actually quite a lot of info on it on the board here. Take a look over in the driver's health corner, or do a search on it.

Yea, I have it to. I havent heard of any companies that wont hire yoy because of that, but there could be some. You just have to show compliance with your machine.

Thanks everybody. I know it is weird for a 22 year old to have it. They didn't even want to give me a consult the first time I talked to them about it. I appreciate the info.

Max, everybody pretty much hit it right on. I also have it. It is all about being honest about it. I was and when the dot doctor came to my school he gave me a 3 month medical card so I can finish my school. The specialist I see for it is a good guy and is all about helping me getting cleared so I can get my 1 year card later this month. The only thing that sucks is having to get a sleep study every year.

WHOA THERE! Somebody is trying to "take you for a ride!" There is absolutely NO MEDICAL REASON to get a sleep study every year. They are giving you the old - well, you get the idea.

You have your sleep study. They know what to prescribe. The machine itself will tell you what is going on and what needs to be changed. Unless you have a dramatic change in your condition, there is no reason for another study. AND AIN'T NO WAY THERE IS A REASON FOR A STUDY EVERY YEAR, unless you are extremely unstable in your reactions to the machine.

These #### doctors will stroke you, and kiss you, and love you up while they do their best to turn you upside down and shake every last nickel out of your pockets! You need to start questioning what he is telling you, and if it doesn't sound logical, don't go along with it. Remember, this is YOUR LIFE and YOUR BODY they are talking about here. Don't be afraid to question your doctor, and don't be afraid to get a second and maybe a third opinion.

This sleep apnea stuff is just the latest in a long line of things where folks in the medical community can rip you off.

A personal note here. I got my initial CPAP over in Flagstaff, AZ. I never went back for a doctor's consult with it. That was for five years. Then we moved back to Southern Utah, and about the same time, the laws changed on getting supplies for the machine. Now, you need a prescription for everything from a new machine to filter replacement.

So, in keeping with the new law, I saw a local sleep doctor here. While he DID NOT try to talk me into another study, he DID try to talk me into have a regular six month "consult." For a hefty fee of course.

So we had a little heart to heart chat about how it was going to go. While never being rude to him, I firmly stood my ground, and let him know that I had enough experience with this to recognize a problem if it occurred. We agreed on one yearly visit, unless problems came up.

You just have to watch these folks.

I will add one more thought here. I know full well, that there is no way I would be alive today if I had not started the CPAP. I could not get through the day without falling asleep. And it could be in mid conversation, or even during a meal.

I know my Dad has been on a CPAP for over a year now, I just got put on one. He said that he's been getting better though, and that he doesn't think he'll have to use it for much longer. Of course, he is in a profession that gives you ample time to excercise on a regular basis.
