So I was talking with a couple former OTR guys on another forum I frequent and this topic came up.
I'm going to be working for Werner for a while and I want to be able to keep my own hard copy log for my own records (tax reasons) and if there system ever goes down. I was told this would not be a good thing to do because you can get cited for working 2 logs. Another guy told me that if i put "VOID" "training only" on the cover and each additional page I log that I should be ok to do it. what are some of your thoughts on this?

I am not sure what the real reason for you keeping two logs, but with SNI, we can get on the net and download our logs for past 6 months. If tax purposes are only reason, then maybe you can do this with Werner also. If there is some reason, why would anyone ever need to see your hard copy? It is a moot point, since if you are asked for your logs the eobr will be the only valid record.

When I worked at Werner I would get a hard copy of all the electronic logs sent to me every six months or so in the mail without even asking for them. Not sure if they still do this, but it should solve your problem. I would advise against running two logs even if one does say it's for training use. I just wouldn't want to deal with the extra hassle.
I still remember a green trooper asking to see my log book and I told him I don't have one. I think his co workers put him up to it because they were all watching. His reaction was priceless. -
If you're concerned about having documentation to support your per diem claim, keep copies of your BOLs and a journal with your locations throughout the year. Maybe one of those pocket calendars where you can write your start and end location on each of the days. Your BOLs will be supporting documentation. You should be keeping copies anyway...just for CYA when the new girl in the office accidentally throws them in the shredder.
Additionally, I'm not sure how Werner does it, (someone described it above) but copies of logs could be obtained from Prime if the need came up.

If you are only doing it for tax purposes--you could keep some kind of journal in truck--not a log--just a notebook(or whatever)with all the needed info--then when you get home--transfer that to a logbook(if you feel the need)and leave that book at home--so no double log on road and you still have a record

Be very careful who you take advice from - on anything.
There is no need to use paper logs with e-logs, even if the system "goes down". Your qualcomm tracking IS your log, and is still being maintained by your company (and can be faxed/emailed to any scale), unless you hit something and knocked the satellite antenna off the truck...THEN your problems are more serious than logging your miles. -
I did have a broken qualcom once and had to use paper logs for about a week. It can go down, but it really isn't a big deal to start a paper log the day it goes down.

Log books are really not required for the tax return. It has just been an easy way to provide the information in the past.
Like many on here have stated, any record will be adequate.
A calendar showing the stops each day.
A journal with the daily information and the location at night.
Receipts from a stop for the day.
Nothing really major. -
Also an E log and paper log may not be identical. I just started elogs about a week ago and my company has me running both. The rounding to the closest 15 minutes you do on paper makes a difference. I pulled on the yard this weekend with 40 minutes to spare on my 70 and would have been over hours on paper. The difference was 7 days of logging 3-6 minute breaks off duty at fuel stops, terminals, rest areas etc plus fuel stops under 15 minutes.

I get what you all are saying.. Maybe a journal would be best for it. I would just like to keep a copy for my own records just in case the need ever arises that i need it. Thanks for the Info guys.
