Just Got My Class B License, But No Job!!!

    I'm just wondering why you spent the money to go to school to get a Class B. I would think that you would have gone for the Class A, that would allow you to drive anything, with the proper endorsements of course.

    Once again, I am NOT sitting at home, waiting for someone to bang on my door and give me a job. I just find it extremely frustrating that I cannot find a job that does NOT require having some kind of prior experience. How can you get the job if you have no experience, and how can you get the experience with no job? It's completely contradicting.

    Three reasons: Money, Time, and hopefully better chance of getting a warehouse gig. I currently work for a parts warehouse, and make just over minimum wage. According to the state, I make too much money to qualify for financial assistance and I am perfectly capable of paying for school on my own. Rather than taking 8 weeks off from work to go to school, I chose to take off 4, which is a lot less painful when you have no money to begin with. Warehouse work is what I enjoy doing. By obtaining my Class B CDL, I have a better chance of getting a local warehouse job with the option to drive if needed. I have ZERO desire to go OTR. I am a family man, and I choose to keep it that way. Not to mention Class A drivers make just a little bit more on average than your typical Class B driver, you will NEVER see your family for the first few years, and you are confined to a truck 24/7 with the occasional rest stop or meal in a bag. Prison on wheels. In my opinion, If I did get my Class A, then I WOULD be wasting my money, in more ways than one.

    No it's not. Would you fly a plane without experience? Would you want your family in a truck driven by someone without experience?

    You have to pay your dues... you will be operating a CMV which can be considered a lethal weapon.

    There IS a reason these companies require experience... rookie drivers account for many more accidents and claims than drivers with experience.

    You sometime have to sacrifice in order to achieve your goals when starting out in this business.

    I just got my CDL and found a job working 14-40hrs straight w/every other weekend off hauling diesel...yes, the 14hr and 10hr rules is thrown out the door almost daily and I end up sleeping in a day cab sometimes. FYI: I spend most of that time parked and very little time driving. I actually enjoy my job but the hours are rough. I hardly see my family at all but it's a means to an end. Here in another month or two I'll have 6 months of hazmat tanker experience and will apply for hauling crude oil. If I get that job which I'm sure want be a problem since their short on drivers, I'll make 20K a year more (75K a year) and only working 12hr days Mon-Fri w/weekends off. I could make 100K if I worked nights but I figured by the time I get to that point, I'll have put in enough night duty to last a long time lol.

    Hey haulingasphalt try Disney they are always hiring bus drivers the pay is not all that great but you will get the experience you need also though its too late now they would have paid you to train for your cdl. May want to try mears transportation.
