yep, there is good money in that, until it dries up. UPRR runs a train 3x per week Denver to Long Beach, 87 cars, all double stacked with MT's, they may add a 4th.

I can get loaded out of Denver on Monday and be in Oakland by Wednesday morning to drop....That train might get to Oakland by Tuesday morning...But they can't offload until Friday.....Or later.....
Rail is only efficient in units hauled....But trucks....Are more efficient time wise...Gears Thanks this. -
Actaully, the train won't beat you to Long Beach. Your right, trucks are more efficient time wise. UPRR Denver to Long Beach is 3 to 4 days, Seattle is 3 to 4 days, Houston is 3 days, NJ/Philly/NY is 5 days, Chicago is 24 hrs to 4 days depending on the train. Every week we get dispatched loads for Monday AM drop from Chicago, the train is supposed to leave Chicago Friday at 6pm and arrive Denver Sunday # 6am. Typically, it's 14 to 18 hrs late.

if two drivers bought a cheap truck and worked it together could you make money hauling containers? Is location a factor?
-
hauling cans on a chasis, there is very little money in it, expecially if you are in a metro area like Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Fransissco, or Atlanta. ECT..
If you are hauling containers on a flat bed going across the country they can pay well, in fact if it is a high cube container on a step deck, they can often times pay very well.
I have picked up high cubes that paid me to run from long beach to North Carolina, they paid me for sitting at the dock while the can was getting unloaded, then paid me to take it back to Georgia and drop it at the rail yard.
The thing is though this was not an every day thing, they are common, but not that common. -
Is running cans out of Kansas city from the rails any good? No ports involved.
