Seen a post the other day, and it stated High Blood Pressure is an absolute disqualification for new drivers. Is this true? Even when it is so common, and easily controlled with meds (with no side effects that would bother a driver)? As you guessed I got it and take meds to control. Not a big deal I thought. Certainly don't want to get to a school and then be removed for this or not disclosing info and it show up in urine sample. I don't need to get started if this is the case. Perhaps another door closed. Thanks for your response. In CHRIST

It is ok to be on BP medication. As long as your BP is under control you will not be disqualified. I think as long as it is under 140/90 you will be ok. You will only get a one year medical certificate but you will get it.

    Kimmit and ewill71 Thank this.

i think i read in my current issue of "LandLine magazine", that the blood pressure limits are going to change. meaning, a LOWER set of numbers.......

I had high blood pressure brfore I drove the cab, and I had to get a DOT physical also. My physical form says that you're disqualified if it's over or equal to 180/110. Mine was at Stage 2; so in three months, I had to bring it down to Stage 1 (the 140/90 or lower). When I got the meds, I came down to 127/76 within a week. With diet, exercise, and the right meds (this especially--for most of us), it is more than doable. I was really scared when I had to do it, but I now know to relax. My meds are almost $1.50/pill (Lotrel--the only thing pricier are the higher dosages), but with them I have no problem whatsoever.

    Folks,
Thanks a BUNCH for responding. That's a healthy word to hear. Thought I was going to get boogered up on that. Now all I have to do is figure out this complex world of schools (for lack of money and financing) and company contract for the year.

REALLY appreciate your time !!! In CHRIST

I had heard they were thinking of changing it. I wasn't sure if they had done it yet or not.

Then what would be your suggestions, upon speaking with a representative, when asked as I have been already and said "no". Should I inquire with them what the numbers currently are for a DOT pass. I mean the med's may or may not show up in a sample. Little touchy hugh?

I'm listening, Thanks always. In CHRIST

BP medication will not show up in a urine sample. I would just tell them you just started taking them and play it off that way.

It is real easy. You simply tell them you just went to the doc and he just put you on them. It really isn't that big of a problem. They are not going to look at your medical records or the pill bottle when you take your physical so they won't know when you started taking them. The reason I am reluctant to tell you to just not say anything is because if your BP is a little high when you go to take your physical you will have a little more leeway if you are on a bp medication.
