Looking to come back to the industry..... One problem, I have let my CDL go......I would have to start from the bottom. I once had Class A, w/tanker, w/air brake, and w/hazmat. I had attended driving school back in the day and drove close to 10 years after that. I have been off the road for 20 some years.. I am looking to get back on the road to be a relief driver to make a little extra income and once my wife retires, hit the road and travel until the good Lord says its time to stop......
My job now is supplying parts to the HD truck industry and automotive..... I have a customer or two that will let me use their equipment to take my driving test if I would want to persu this......
Any suggestions???????
Thank you for your time.
Would Like To Come Back......

Depending on if your going to get hired on by company's that are larger in size. Most require recent work experience or schooling. Smaller fleets MIGHT over look it if you get your CDL, but there is still a 20 year gap and things have changed alot.

sorry C&O but from what I know and the driver I am with- he said basically you will have to start back at the bottom-go to school, get your CDL A and get some experience or hope those small companies at that point will let you do that relief work for them with no recent experience.

Unless you can line up a company in advance that will hire you if you get your CDL on your own, you will probably need to go back to school.

I was in the same boat. I took a CDL refresher and retook the test after 10 years. It all came back quick. I tried to get on with Swift but ended up getting hired by a small fleet here in El Paso through a contact my wife has at work.
