    Well thanks for checking. I am by no means an expert so I value more input.

    I just know a lot of people have trouble with this rule and it is valuable if you understand it. Maybe if enough people like it this thread could be a sticky.



    A few details to keep in mind....you cannot use part of one 8-2 split for another 8-2 ie. you take a 2 hour break then later an 8 hour break. after that 8 hour break you need to start a fresh 10 hour cycle, you can't use that 8 hour break plus another 2 for a fresh 14.

    Also, I say 8 and 2 hours. It does not have to be exactly 8 hours and 2 hours, but at LEAST 8 hours sleeper and 2 hours combination. I'm actually planning on using the split today, I have 3 hours driving in. Once I'm loaded I'll drive another hour and take a 2 hour break for lunch and to stretch. Then at my refuel another few hours down the road I'll take an 8 hour and get to drive at night like I prefer without feeling like I wasted any of my 14. Also this gets me in a truck stop to rest before the rush hour, otherwise I'd be trying to find a place to park between 2000-2200 which is no fun.

    I have used it alot and always do a check on the DDL to keep me from fines.

    It's worth mentioning that when you do a 8-2 split, you're borrowing time from your next 11 hour clock.

    Example:

    You take your 8 hour break and drive for 6 hours. Then you take the 2 hour break. You're only going to have 5 hours of drive time after that 2 hour break.

    A 8-2 split will only reset the 14 hour clock. It does not reset the 11 hour clock, or the 60/70 hour clock. The only way you can reset the 11 hour clock is to take a full 10 hour break. Roadmedic, that might be the issues your DDL was giving you.

    I was posting the 8 hour break as off duty and it has to be in the sleeper to qualify.

    Is this a mandatory 2 hr break while driving or can i stop and do whatever for an hour and keep the wheels spinning?

    I thought they changed it some...so that the 8 hour break had to be first?

    No, it can be either break first, but the new 14 starts from the end of the first break.

    I am actually using the split now in another good example.

    I started my day at 0815, logged my 15 min inspection then I drove for 3 hours to my shipper and got loaded. at the shipper I spent 3 hr 15 min in the sleeper and 30 mins getting loaded. When I slid my tandems I noticed something was funky with the trailer brakes. I drove 1hr 15 mins to a ta to have them checked. They need work so I am going to take my 8 hour sleeper break here. Since I only worked 1hr 45min after my first break at the end of my 8 hr break while my trailer is being repaired I will have 12hr 15min of my 14 and 9hr 45 min of my 11 remaining. Of course if I am here 10 hours I will just reset both my clocks. But if not I can save some time and keep going.

    How you're explaining this seems wrong, but that may have to do with your choice of words. Split sleeper isn't rocket science, as a matter of fact it's pretty much the same as before the last HOS rule revisions save the 8 hr minimum sleeper requirement.

    Eight sleeper hrs stops the 14 hr clock. Drive time on either side of a break must be 11hrs or less. Two breaks must add to minimum of 10. Second break 2 hrs minimum.
    Easy peasy.

    For some reason this is still kicking my arse..LOL

    So, after you take an 8hr sleeper and later a 2hr whatever,,,you Have to take a fresh 10?? We had it explained in my last orientation, and the guy made it sound easy,,but of course I didn't right it down.. anyway, he made it sound like you could do it indefinetly but in order to get out of the spit, would have to take a 10...
