I believe you are incorrect. You can do an 8 hr sleeper followed by 2 hrs off duty followed by 8 hours sleeper. After the last 8 hour break your 14/11 starts at the end of the previous 2 hour break and is extended by your 8 hour break.

O/D at 0400, .25 PTI 6 hrs driving .25 fuel, Take an 8 hour break 1030. 1830 you have 7.50 on the 14 and 5.00 driving. Drive for 5.00 and take a 2 hour break at 2330. At 0130 you have 7.00 0n your 14 and 6.00 driving available, your 14/11 starts at the end of your previous break. drive 5.75 PTI o.25 Start 8 hour break at 0730. At 1530 you will have 5.25 of your 11 and 8.00 of your 14 to work with. The same pattern continues until you take a full 10 hour break. It can go on until your 70 expires.

yatista,,,,I am fantastic from on the first sentence of you example.. the first 8hr break just extended your original 11/14, to after the 8hr break.. got it, really! You lost me after that, I think you stoped being exact..

I drive for 5 hours which would bring me to 23:30..I than take a 2hr break which would bring me to 01:30... So, at 01:30 I would have 7of14 and 6of11?? How did you get that? I am not getting where the 11/14 started over after you drove the 5 and took your 2hr break??? thanks

I left out the 2 hours in my calculation. Good catch, my bad. Have corrected previous post and added explanation.

Many thanks to Digger for the excellent, simplified explanation!
For anyone struggling to figure out how to do the split correctly after reading this thread, I strongly suggest that you visit the FMCSA website and look at the logging examples that they have posted. You can download a PDF file of the examples so you can refer to it on the fly!

you can flip flop your 8's and 2's until the end of time, keep in mind that DOT folks don't fully understand the rules, and often times drivers don't understand them. You also may want to check with your safety department. There are companies that have policies against running split sleepers, mostly because everyone messes them up. This stuff aint rocket science, but it can get confusing.

395.1(2)(ii)(c) Calculation of the 14-hour limit includes all time except any sleeper-berth period of at least 8 but less than 10 consecutive hours; compliance mut be re-calculated from the end of the first of the two periods used to comply with paragraph (g)(1)(ii)(A) of this section.

You cannot use teh 2 hour period first!
