My childhood dream of becoming a truck driver turned into a nightmare!

After doing alot of research and deciding I'm not afraid of a little hard work I talked to a recruiter and decided .41 cpm to start is about the best in the business. They also pay better through school, its a 3 month wait list for school so it puts me right about the time frame I want to go. thanks for the heads up.

Don't sell the house. The market is down, wait for things to recover. Put it in the hands of a property manager and hit the road. See if your state has education grants for truck driving schools. Some do. Most companies will pay you back for your schooling, usually about a hundred a month. Drive for a couple of years for a good company. Figure out the industry.
Most O/O's get into trouble because they sign bad deals with too little in the bank to back themselves until there is a cash flow. And then of course there are those individuals that just shouldn't be in business.
These are some of the things that I have discovered in my recent research. I am once retired and am just now going to work for Roelh (Jan 7th). I have recently (in the last year) moved from California to Tennessee. So it sounds like we have some of the same thoughts, and considerations. Tennessee ponied up $3100 for school and even threw in $108 gas money for the eighteen day school. Which taught me enough to be dangerous. Now it's up to Roehl's trainers.
And tell your wife she will get the hang of it. And believe it or not become somewhat comfortable with that big truck.

you can borrow against it later for your rig, if you learn you really like this stuff. I dreve local for 8 to 10 hours a day, and I'm glad to get out of it at days end. you just have to go yourself and drive, after getting the license first, separate of the company. take their orientation and hit it. see if you like it first.When it's right, it's really theraputic I will do the otr test in 08.

Trucking has changed a lot and is still going to change a lot....
Not for the better but for the worse as in making any money OTR...
Now being a team it will not effect you as much but still you will be effected some with the new HOR rules they want to implement... (Thank corporate greed for the new changes they want)...

If you have been out of trucking for a while and want to jump into your own truck then Insurance will greatly play into this... I would suggest calling a few Insurance companies and get quotes... I don't think a company like Landstar would insure you because they require "recent OTR experience so you would need to carry your own primary insurance if you are able to get any...

Your next option would be to train with a company for a year such as Schneider National and do a year with them as company drivers...


Air card is the only way to go if you ask me.... As a team driver the Internet is always nice to have while the other is driving...
Even with the latest program Streets maps, coplilot and a few more I have (GPS moving maps) they are not always right... This way you can go online at anytime and get the latest updates (msn maps, Google maps, yahoo maps, maquest ext..) and get to your destination.... (most of the time...

Many times I have ran into an issue with getting incorrect information such as wrong address or wrong phone number, just looked it up online ext...
I also do faxing online, as an owner operator this is very helpful in sending bills in ext..

Many other thing I use it for such as family and web cam ext...
