| If you get paid by the mile the best way to get paid is ACTUAL miles driven. Some companies use the zip code to zip code pay scale and that can rip you off, they dont pay for the miles driven in a zip code just the ones to get there....some pay based on a direct route, I beleive that is often refered to practical miles pay scale that means you get paid for miles that a program says you have to drive to get to your destination and often dont get paid if you have a detour etc. IF your talking to companies about pay scale always ask which system they use, what their breakdown pay is AND how long you have to be down before it kicks in. Hope this helps

| KLLM pays practical route miles. I have to get rerouted a lot when I get a load going west, which is more than I prefer! There's a company policy against driving I-70 west of Denver, so I have to remind them when the computer routes me that way to change the route, which also usually increases my paid miles. As to getting paid hub miles, good luck finding someone that will do that. That's not to say that companies don't exist that pay hub (odometer) miles, but they're very rare. It's my understanding that eventhough they say it's actual miles, if you have to go around a wreck or something like that, you usually won't get paid those miles. The companies that pay hub miles are usually small ones and know exactly how many miles (within one or two) the trip should be. Anything too much over that will not be paid, as there are people who would take advantage of this and intentionally drive more miles just to pad their paycheck.

| Thanks to all - looks like practical is the way to go - especially if odometer is just a dream! this forum is awesome for a newbie - nothing exists like this for someone considering a move to IT!

| Small company that I work for pay all odometor miles.Actually they pay all miles from 'Streets and Maps' + up 10% from that in case I have to take detour, another road, etc.Trip from New York to Miami and back with 8-10 stops is about 3000 miles(so they would pay up to 3300 miles),and I usually make 3200 miles-all paid.I think that's a very good deal.Again company is small and that's the contract they made for me. |

| Practical miles is usually the best you can hope for. you sure don't want zip code miles as those are straight line "as the bird flies" miles. I get paid hub miles(odometer) for any mile I drive. If i go home I get paid. If I take an alternate route because of wether, etc...I get paid. But like stated before this is rare. I'v been with my boss long enough that he knows I would never cheat him so he's good to us. Most our guys have been around at least 4 years. Doesn't sound liek much but that's prety good in this industry |
