Attention all rookies and wannabes: Local Jobs for New Drivers

IMHO, one who drives for an irregular common carrier should do just that, drive. They are paid to drive the freight from point A to point B. Let the receiver unload their own freight, They wanted it. But no, they(the company) will have the drive do for $15 or pay a lumper $300(what a joke)

Thank the insurance companies for that BS. Plus the big mega OTR companies think just because we are home nightly that we don't know how to log or back a big trailer. They should try backing a 48' with a full sleeper into some of the places I have. What fun we have.

Alot of local companies around here are starting to that, even thought they say they require one year experience, walk in and talk to them, if they like you they hire you.
I was trained and molded by a company i was working for. They loved training their own drivers. Every driver there was trained by them. Then again, not alot drivers wanted to come of the road and do what we did. That would be HHG and commercial moving, not really a driving job.

 

HHG is in fact a brutal job, as is McLane and the likes. If you like to hustle, and physical work does not bother you, seems like you can make a decent buck though.

 

Four years HHG and commercial moving, nine years foodservice and I have no complaints on payday

and it does take a certain type of personality to do this. You have to be crazy and nuts at the sametime

 

Across the street from my plant, there is a tiny gas station. A McLane sleeper truck (Freightliner Century) goes in there every night...He tells me he wouldn't want my job, and I tell him I wouldn't want his.....An amazing friendship we have.....

 

Judging by the turnover rate in the OTR, 4-6 months is a lot more than most companies get out of their new hires. And I don't blame your company for their hiring practices.

never mind going OTR, I was just happy when i got to go out of STATE a year or so ago when i turned 21, (got my cdl at 18 )

I worked for Polep in MA, single axle tractor, pulling double pups, then going into boston (and you think NYC is hard haha) and delivering ~400 peices out of the trailer with a hand truck, then I went to trailer dump and find it kind of boaring, and the pay sucks, so now I want to go back to doubles.

as much as it may suck, I was taking home over a grand peddling product, and it does keep you in shape. Im not about to go to swift/werner/whoever for $300 a week because I dont have "over the road" experiance

 

I'd much rather back up, drive in the city all day and unload the truck. That'd keep you mentally and physically healthier I think.
