I ran local fo my first few years, hauling gravel and sand here in Florida. Listened to guys talk about being over the road the way guys who never get laid talk about fearing the clap. ONCe I got out on the road, hauling cars, I LOVED IT! Heres why. IT's about QUALITY TIME at HOME not QUANTITY TIME. I love the peace and quiet i get sleeping in my bunk opposed to the noisy house, interrutpions etc. I Make double the money working over the road, and I get into a groove, about three weeks of it where I AM THE MACHINE! NOw the box carrier over the road stuff for $1000 a wk ? no way, OGOD PLEASE NO !! But for hauling cars, Reefer, Flatbed, OVER THE ROAD is the ticket baby!

AFter I get some more experience I may look into car hauling , but for now Im trying to keep it simple.

If you're just starting out and don't wana go OTR BELIEVE me when I tell you that you don't have to. I've never been OTR once and never will be. It's a miserable life living in your tractor and showering and ######## at nasty ### truck stops! Any foodservice company will hire you with no experience. You will work your ### off, but it's well worth it. I personally think it's just boring just driving, i like to work also. I do one layover trip where i stay in a hotel and two day trips and I bring home about $1225 a wk, but I earn every dam red cent of it. 95% of Long Haulers don't make that much and they live in their trucks.

Just graduated from road master in jacksonville got pre hired by Werner and con way but would love to stay home in jax. Anybody got a list of local companies in duval and Nassau counties?

Werner? You should have your head examined if you go drive for that rag-tag operation. You'll be making like 23-25cpm I think? Whatever it is you will not be bring home more than $450 a wk for 65-70 hour work weeks on top of all the other hassles that come with OTR truck driving, have you thought about all those? I'm here to tell you that you DO NOT have to go OTR just cause you have no experience. I never spent a day in a sleeper and never would or will! The day I have to take a job long haul trucking I will just change my career. I started with US Foods right out of school, they came down to the school practically begging students to come work there. You will learn how be such a proficient truck driver working for a foodservice distributor because of all the crazy places you have to deliver in the cities. All you will do for a OTR company is drive on the highway! Check out all the foodservice distributors that are with in a 60mi radius from you: US Foods, Sysco, McClane, MBM, Gordons, Core-Mark, Reinhart. Mclane and MBM are always hurting for drivers nationwide, so I'd start with those 2 first and be persistent, even if they say 1 year experience apply anyways and call them up. I'm telling you you will get with one of those companys for sure. It's the hardest work you'll ever do but you will be making double what you'd make with werner and you won't haveto sleep in your truck and shower in flying j's.. Good Luck

youngleaves is right. Werner is not a good company. But maybe not all drivers have the same experience at it. Some might do well and some might not. But for my experience at Werner is starting to turn out bad, they will promise you everything but when your driving for them they dont keep their promise. At the beginning I was with Werner I was doing great, but problem was hometimes sometimes. But towards the end of my 2 years with them, it got worst. Im not getting miles that results to a low pay. To much sitting and waiting, and their equipment is not the best to drive for sometimes. I plan to move on. But like I said before, you might not go thru this experience, some drivers do well there some drivers do not. It is up to you to decide

Finishing up CDL school this week i`m going to put apps in every LTL company i can, i have no problem starting out on the docks.Should i apply as a new driver or enter into there apprentice program?

Do the food service companies work on weekends too?
