Attention all rookies and wannabes: Local Jobs for New Drivers

Harvey-Thank you for the post...excellent information. Long story short, hubby has his one year exp with a mega carrier, the past few months on a dedicated regional run. The run was eliminated and he opted not to go back to OTR as we have two little ones at home who need to be with the Daddy more than once every few weeks. We've been applying to everything we see on Craigslist and the job boards. Hubby went to the terminals and they won't let him in past the guard shack. Phone calls are voice mails left. Any suggestions on how to get to the right person? We are in Arizona. Thank you.

 

i am in the same boat harvey i can't pm you either due to low post count. what would be better: a local trucking school ran out of the vo tech (instructor is DOT certified examiner so you pass the class you pass the test) which costs 2400.00 the other option is one of these places that says a company will pay for my school. downside to this is it will obviously be OTR and although I wouldn't mind doing it, I wanted to wait till my kids go older. And the rep on the phone said because I live in Oklahoma, there are no schools here that would allow that because Oklahoma isn't an "open" state (whatever that means) the closest to me is Fort Worth, Texas. Again problem because right now I am the only one working and if I go off to school nobody is there to support the wife and kids. I have a class a permit and I just passed the pre trip portion of the test (flubbed the backing when I pulled up too many times) Unless one of my friends comes through who I have been asking if they have or know someone with a truck, my option will be the school thing. suggestions?

 

where in nor cal? im technically cen cal but we consider ourselves northern compared to the folks down south if you know what i mean.

 

You talk LTL Local...What about LTL Regional..Or LTL Long Haul..yeah if your the type who wants to be home all every nite then LTL local is the way to go. LTL over the Road can make you Great Money depending on the Line Haul Pay..I use to get 80% of each line haul loaded onto my truck and trailer. That can make for a hefty payday when the line hauls are top dollar.. I use to haul electronics for trade shows back in the day and Multi Stop PU or LTL were great paydays as were multi stops for exibit houses headed to Conventions.... jmo...

Thanks that is a super great idea I'm going to make some phone calls I see ABF and UPS condo cabs pulling doubles all the time. Great combo make money and not see the wife everyday is a win win 4 me!

I'd like to see some honest posts about "home every night with an LTL job". Seems as when I'm at Conway freight yards, guys are rolling in at 2am........doesn't seem like they are home at nite. Also, what are the true hours in a week? How long does it take to start making actual good money with a day shift route, i.e. in at 6-7 am and home at 6-7pm?
