Yes, this does sound like a funny question, but...
We must ride with a trainer for weeks. There is 1 truck sleeper. Is the stanard proceedure to park by a motel and 1 gets the truck while the other gets the motel? Or do we leave our dignity on the highway and share the sleeper? Or do we stop at a truck stop and 1 gets the truck while the other sleeps on the roof? Or does 1 drive 11 hours and the other sleep and vica-versa and the for the remaining 2 hours we sit in a restaurant together?

SofaSurfer you ask a good question. The question you would ask the trucking company before hiring on is "does the truck I will be trained in have two bunks?"

Some do and some don't. Double bunk trucks are more common now than in the past. My first company used a single bunk truck, used a training truck as a substitute for a team truck, and had very little freight that needed to be moved by team drivers. They often used their team/training truck like an emergency expedite service. It really was lame when we got assigned a short distance load or one with lots of time to deliver. When we got to a customer and had lots of time to wait it was no fun. I, being much smaller and younger than the trainer, usually "volunteered" to sleep in or across the seats while the trainer used the single bunk. He said some of the times a student and him would use the bunk at the same time sleeping foot-to-face on their sides, but mostly someone just slept in the seats.

The truth is while my trainer was good, very experienced, and wise I never got a decent nap in the truck while it was moving. I thought eventually I would be so tired from lack of sleep I would be able to sleep through a 5 hour cycle and seldom remember getting more than 1 hour of sleep at a time.

I brought my clothes, an atlas, and a sleeping bag and pillow, even though I am a pack-rat by nature and over-equipped my truck once I had one assigned. You are living in someone else's truck and must not impose more than necessary.

Just joined this forum (after reading it for a day and some) and am both impressed and sobered by this career change I've chosen.

I start my training with C-1 in Ark next week, then will be going on with PAM.

This packing list thread is a great idea - and reminds me of my pre-combat checks during my military days.

I'm wondering if one of those Ranger Gear Bags would be the right thing to bring along when I'm with the company trainer during orientation?
