I posted this here because i didnt see a dedicated hazmat section, if i missed it im sorry.

I work for a local company doing daycab short haul runs, usually pulling an end dump trailer hauling rock and scrap iron. Today i missed out on work because my usual run didnt need my truck. I missed out because a couple of the other drivers got to haul nitrate to a fertilizer plant and i dont yet have my hazmat endorsement. I havent had the need to get it til now because i never drove for a company that hauled any hazmat. My question is what does it cost and how difficult is it to obtain? I know there is a written test and a background check (which i dont have a problem passing because i have an indiana handgun permit), but what else?

Go to your local BMV and pick up the hazmat book to study. If I remember correctly, IN charges $85 for hazmat endorsement but don't quote me on that.

In Maine you are required to notify the TSR site of your request for hazmat endorsement. They will do a security check and then for $85 paid online they will either endorse you or deny you. You WILL need to print out the image from their acceptance. They wont send it to you in the mail. Once you have that you are required to go to your local sherrif or other site required by your Beaureau of Motor Vehicles for fingerprinting. Once all that is done, you will be required to pass a test, they will ask you things like, is debris allowed on the floor of trailer. If trailer is a reefer should you allow the refer to run during loading unloading and enroute. Another question was what food stuffs are allowed with hazardous materials. What items are not allowed to be hauled with each other (and A, B, C, D type question). Pass that and you will have your endorsement. When you renew your license (or at least here in Maine) you will get TSR for another security check and pay the $85 again.

Just the hazmat endorsement doesn't qualify you for hauling hazmat . You have to take certified training and carry the card with you . Your employer may give the training or it may be available online .

We are required to carry that card too. Even without a hazmat endorsement.

Heres a tip for Calif, when you renew your lic with hazmat go to a coml dmv otherwise they make you take all the tests, general, air, tank, dbls/trbles, and hazmat, i know i did this once what a pain when it wasn,t told upfront, but i still passed it.

Also, in CA. it is on the license itself. No need for separate card.

ETA; i see i might have to do more training at carrier.

Here is a link to the TSA's website in which you can learn more and begin the process of getting the threat assessment/background check. https://hazprints.tsa.dhs.gov/Public/

You will first need to apply online and then go get your fingerprints taken at one of the sites tsa has on the list for your state (or even another).

You will need two pieces of ID for the fingerprint site. Once the background check is complete, you have 30 days to pass the written exam at your local DMV.

Its going to cost you 89.25 for the threat assessment/background check and whatever your state charges for the test and of course for adding the endorsement (if applicable)

You will need to renew this EVERY TIME you renew your license which should be every four years and you will be required to pay each time as well as pay for and take the test again.

Once you have the hazmat endorsement, your company is required to give you hazmat training once every 3 years and you are required to carry the certification card. You should also have other required training about safety and security of the hazmat load.

49 CFR 172.704 Hazmat Employers Must:
    • Train and Test employees
    • Certify employees
    • Maintain records of training (including the three previous years) for each Hazmat employee (while they are employed and 90 days after)
    Records Must Include:
    • Employee's name
    • Training completion date
    • Training Materials description or location
    • Name and address of the trainer
    • Hazmat employee certification of training and testing
