It's like any other skilled endeavor. Some guys have the talent and some will never be that great at it. Where you start is kind of irrelevant IMO.

Agreed. In my opinion it's a more prestigious job than most. Drop and hook, home every day. $30 +/hr. Can't beat that. A lot of guys in my town just run back and forth from the inter-modal yard. Hell I'd love to drop and hook for that kind of change. I actually have to get a pretty good sweat going to earn $19.53 at my LTL job.

I drove for a Convenience store chain in the midwest, Worked 4 days a week, benefits, overtime, etc. Very tough to get into, was one of the youngest drivers they had, worked there 7 1/2 years. That was a good job, rated up there with UPS.

I've driven for some specialty entertainment gigs that most would die to do.

Yep. Gotta be super loads (200K plus).
Home every nite for weeks at a time then gone for a few days. Fly back home when you are on a rigging job...
I see a pattern here. UPS, os/ow, Wal-Mart, all need at least 5 years exp.

Do your time like the rest of us and you might make a career out of this. Most CDL mill grads think they will get $100K and home every nite with 2 years exp. Sorry supertrucker but unless your daddy owns Wal-Mart, you are gonna do some hard time for a while.

Yes, YOU KNOW you CAN DO the job. However, many employers have been burnt way too many times by some of those very same, "I know I can do the job", types.

    YES, YES, YES...!!!

If the CDL SCHOOL's WERE actually teaching all the proper things newbies needed to learn, instead of, "how many can we get through our revolving door this week", then the caliber of newbies would be far superior to what it has been over the years.

If the trucking companies ACTUALLY HAD driver-trainers to carry on MORE training after school instead of, "how many newbies can we get in our revolving door and collect government money this month", then the trucking industry would be far superior.

Sadly, this will NOT happen any time too soon. As I have stated, at MY company, one NEEDS 5 years experience. Maybe if MORE companies bumped up the years of experience requirement, we WILL SEE far fewer dummies on the road, clogging up the fuel island, actually washing thier hands before they leave the bathroom and go to the "all you can eat buffet"..etc, etc.

CDL dream job, I would have to say heavy haul , over-D day running , sunrise to sun set. Do not have to worry about dummies in their 4 wheelers, they do not see you coming they should not be driving. When they do see you it usually scares them almost off the road. Higher wages, paid down time. Large enough you never have to enter a scale. Most DOT officers would rather slide under a manure wagon for a level 1 than do a mobile scaling of your rig. Chances are you will never get a level 2 or level 3 roadside.

This thread is unbelievable. A guy making less than $20 an hour thinks he has it made.
