    Hello everyone.

I've been thinking about becoming CDL driver for atleast 3 months now, but my situation is somewhat tricky.
I finished my last job (retail associate) 2 months ago with absolutely no savings, now im trying to figure out how to pay for my CDL. Company sponsored training looks good, but that requires to move somwhere for a month, which i cannot afford. Situation with WIA here isnt perfect either, WIA distribution shifted to a private institution and they havent even finished their facility yet. i tried applying for credit, wich didnt worked out as im not employed atm =/.

Anyone... Any advise, tips would be greatly appreciated...

    Thanks in advance!

Schneider used to have a school in Charlotte. It's been a long time since I had a friend go through it so I'm not sure if it's still there or not.

"Moving away" for a month really isn't as bad as you think. Many companies "provide" either a bunk room on site, or a motel room, where in many instances, YOU WILL SHARE a room with someone else.

So do not look down on going to a company, you really SHOULD INQUIRE with the companies.

Yes, the good ole WIA program in many states is under a revision of sorts. My state, hasn't really passed out any money in a while, in fact, not since about LAST AUGUST.>!!!

As far as your credit right now??

That is tough and I feel for you, but I was always told, "things can only go up from here", and that is ever so true.

I wish you well, and I think you WILL be able to get company training at no cost to you, regarding "living" arrangements.

Most companies pay for everything. They will give you a bus ticket or pay for your plane flight, put you up in motel/hotel, usually give you two meals a day and pay for you to through their school. You really can't get better than that.

If you stay at home for school you will have to pay for school at the tune of $6000 + pay for gas to get back and forth everyday for three weeks or so, pay for your own food etc... Then you still have to find a way to get to the company you choose to work for.

Get one of the in-house schools, no up front $$$ needed. However, you'll need food money for a few weeks, they put you in a motel during school.

You may want to also check out some local community colleges--they may offer CDL school and you could apply for a Pell grant or Stafford loan to pay for it

I always say you should have 6 months worth of pay stashed away when you start CDL training and then to help for awhile after finding a job. Even if you do go to a company that pays for everything you're still going to need some cash to get established.

Some say the company schools are ok and many say stay away. Of all the postings from anyone that's gone to the mega carriers after school all say their pay is not the greatest. But if you prepare and use the company for experience then it may turn out to be the best way and can lead on to a great career. Which ever way you pick it's for you and no one else. You're the one that needs to eat and live so you need to be the one that decides where to go. Just make sure you do as research as possible and check all avenues of training and jobs. Don't go by the computer alone, get out and see for yourself. That way you'll know.
