Do most trucking company have APU?

The TK dealers I have been to haven't been recommending the electric APU yet, and many of those installed have quit working.

My friend is driving a truck with one from 2007 and it(The APU) is toast, he has to idle. At least, they allow idling at that company if the APU isn't working. I am seeing new trucks with battery powered APUs but I don't know how well they will hold up, either

The Thermo-King Tri-pacs use a diesel fired heater for heat and the engine drives an AC compressor for AC, it generates DC power only, and the complete package has a 1800 watt inverter for 120 volt power. Most of these are plumbed into the engine cooling system, but an option to keep it separate from the engine is available. The APU uses it's own duct work, the truck duct work and venting isn't touched during installation.

With the anti-idle laws, who wouldn't want an APU?
I think that it should be required nowadays for OTR drivers.

RickG yes sometimes Reefers do run all night because the load requires it. Also running a reefer while the trailer is mt is called precooling. Many shippers WILL NOT load a trailer if it isn't precooled to a certain temp. Ice cream is one. The Trailer has to be at least -10 before the shipper will even begin to load and depending on how hot and humid it is it could take at least 3 hours to cool. Its easier if the trailer has all night to cool while its set on cycle. After that that the reefer needs to be on continious till the load is delivered.

Some states allow newer trucks to idle . That's why you see Certified Clean Idle stickers on some trucks.

True "sometimes ... All night " I disputed the statement they run all the time . Reefers also haul dry freight.
