Do simulators train as well as behind the wheel training?

I read an interesting article here on Ask The Trucker... where testing from an independent group of "scientists found that simulator training, if it closely mimiced real world conditions, still produced similar scores.

Thought I would throw this out for discussion.

they might, but not too many if any schools have them. they are cost prohibitive. right now if memory serves me correctly, only a flight simulator is acceptable in the airline industry as time "behind the wheel"...so to speak.

Not sure it will be a "thing of the future"... but I'm wondering what the cost of a simulator is compared to a training rig?

Well, in the case of airplanes? Around a million. More if you want software upgrades for more than a couple of years.

upwards to half a million dollars.

what would you think the cost of the education will be from that point..??

tv news, and "reports" or websites, make it all look too easy.

i stand corrected, "up to 1 million dollars"

read about it here, from a REAL trucker's website, not some ask us" website"

    http://www.layover.com/news/article/trucking-industry-embraces-training-simulators-9074.html

you are only a student...get what you can, get it done, move on, forgedaboud anything else, as it does not warrant any such further looking into.

My school has a simulator and I found it to be nowhere even close to being similar to actually being behind the wheel. Felt like an overpriced video game to me.

tiny little shifter, maybe all of 3 screens, and a small steering wheel..????

yep, nothing more than a video game for boys still living in mamma's basements.

But, from this... "It's the way of the future," said Don Osterberg, Schneider's vice president of safety."

Sorry. I'm just naturally curious about all things trucking, these days...
